World security, safety and fire protection experts converge in Dubai for Intersec Advanced tech solutions and future of security under the spotlight during three-day exhibition and conference

The world’s leading security, safety and fire protection experts will gather in Dubai for the 2020 edition of Intersec, the world’s leading trade fair for security, safety and fire production, from 19 – 21 January to probe the latest technology solutions transforming the global security industry.

More than 1,100 exhibitors for 50-plus countries, including the majority of the world’s top 50 security manufacturers will be displaying the latest security solutions across the three days when the show opens on Sunday (19 January).

While the exhibition will be a window to disruptive technology shaping the international security sector, Intersec’s three-pronged conference series will bring together change-makers from more than 50 countries, including representatives from 35 governments, trade associations and non-profit organisations to shape the future landscape of the global industry.

Anticipation is also building for the all-new Intersec Arena, a dedicated tech centre for excellence at the show, which will focus on solving digital security challenges through innovation and education.

Andreas Rex, Show Director at Messe Frankfurt Middle East, Intersec organisers, stressed the Arena has been introduced to assist industry professionals in addressing today’s security challenges, which go well beyond public sector providers.

“Businesses today operate in a dynamic threat landscape; security professionals are required to work ahead of the curve, to be predictive and not reactive. The Arena provides a space for industry experts, tech insiders, and security practitioners to share their approaches to achieving resilient, responsive and secure operations,” said Rex.

“We are in a time of unparalleled change – the future of cities and customer interactions are changing rapidly in line with developments in new technology. As organisations rush to embrace digital transformation, security professionals have questions that they would like to have answered.

“The key discussion areas within the Arena programme have been designed to engage with this dialogue. Attendees will gain invaluable insights into new technologies, how they may be implemented successfully and witness first-hand the suggested solutions to mitigate cross-sector industry-specific challenges,” he added.

The Arena has attracted one of the most powerful speaker line-ups seen in the region with industry thought leaders from across the Middle East, Europe and the USA, spanning multiple sectors, from hydrocarbon, banking and finance, municipal affairs, civil defence, customs and healthcare. Highlights will include police and customs representatives from Abu Dhabi and Dubai sharing insights into challenges in digital transformation, while experts from across the GCC will discuss AI implementation in security.

Another key highlight will be the launch of the Security Professionals Association (SPA), a group that fosters technological innovation and operational excellence. This project has been developed by the Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA) and industry stakeholders to support global best practice and innovation in the security industry.

“It is with great pride that we announce the launch of the first security professional association in the region that will offer excellent ways to stay current on the best security practices. SPA for SIRA will open strong networking opportunities between security professionals and organisations and will offer an environment where learning is given the utmost importance to motivate professionals to continue to pursue their goals,” said Eng. Khalid Al Hammadi, Chairman of SPA.

“Our goal is for SPA for SIRA to be an organisation that embodies professional standards that far exceed international benchmarks.”

The conference series also includes the three-day Future Security Summit, where speakers and delegates will explore disruptive technologies, examine security loopholes in business ecosystems and the means of integrating digital and physical security to address critical security threats.

Summit highlights will include an exclusive look at what’s in store for the security industry at Expo Dubai 2020, the technology solutions for future proofing security in smart cities, aviation industry focus sessions and case study insights into how AI solutions can improve corporate security.

The two-day Intersec Fire Conference (19 and 20 January) will put advanced fire safety technologies under the spotlight, including the evolution of regulatory requirements, and standards. The conference will feature case studies, panel discussions and keynote presentations by regulators, fire chiefs, and key solution providers including Lt. Gen. Yousef Al Ansari, the former head of the Kuwait Fire Service Directorate and Honorary board Member of the Kuwait Fire Protection Association.

Ahead of his address on regional best practices in fire protection, Lt. Gen Al Ansari said he will unveil a comparison between theories of community risk assessment and risk reduction versus practical applications in real incident implementation.

Lt. Gen. Al Ansari said advanced technology implementation is high on Kuwait’s fire protection agenda. “Kuwait is always keen on attracting modern technology in all fields, especially in the area of safety to protect lives and property,” he commented.

Intersec 2020 is seen as a watershed event in the evolution of the security industry. “The conventional security areas are being massively disrupted by technology, but security is now increasingly touching on the everyday lives of people – with cyber security key to operating in a safe, secure environment for all,” added Messe Frankfurt Middle East’s Rex.

OMEGA Ready to Time The Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020

For the 6th time at the Youth Olympic Games, OMEGA is ready to fulfil its role as Official Timekeeper. Around 1,880 young athletes from 70 nations have arrived to compete in 81 winter events at Lausanne 2020, and the Swiss watchmaker will be there to time every second.

This is a particularly special occasion for OMEGA. It is the first time since 1948 that the Olympic Games have returned to the brand’s home country of Switzerland. The host city Lausanne is just over 100km from OMEGA’s watchmaking headquarters in Bienne, and the company is looking forward to welcoming the world to the events being competed around the city of Lausanne, on the shores of Lake Geneva, St. Moritz, Champéry and in the nearby Vaud Alps and the French and Swiss Jura mountains.

Just like the Olympic Games held in St. Moritz in 1948, OMEGA is bringing its most advanced technology for its Official Timekeeper duties in Lausanne. This includes the incredible Scan’O’Vision MYRIA photofinish camera, which can take 10,000 digital images per second on the finish line of races, as well as 60 tonnes of equipment such as scoreboards, starting gates, photoelectric cells and much more!

Of course, OMEGA is very familiar with the responsibility of timing the world’s best athletes. Since 1932, the brand has been the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games on 28 occasions, and will continue in the position until at least 2032, marking a full 100 years. Additionally, OMEGA has served in the same role at all five of the previous Youth Olympic Games, which began in Singapore in 2010.

Annual hospitality event follows a milestone year for Saudi Arabia’s tourism industry, after the launch of new visas which attracted 55,000 visitors in just one month

The third annual edition of the Saudi Arabia Hospitality Investment Conference (SHIC), being held from 21-22 January 2020 at Riyadh Airport Marriott Hotel in Riyadh, will bring together more than 350 dignitaries, developers, investors, hotel owners and operators to discuss the future of the Kingdom’s ever-growing hotel market in light of the event theme, ‘Transform Tomorrow’.

Hosted by Dur Hospitality, organised by Semark and co-organised by Bench Events and MEED, SHIC 2020 features more than 90 high-profile speakers from companies paving the way in Saudi Arabia’s hospitality investment industry, including the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority, Al Hokair Group, AMAALA, The Red Sea Development Company and Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA).

Jonathan Worsley, Chairman of Bench Events and Founder of SHIC, said: “We are excited to kick-off 2020 with the third edition of SHIC, which comes following a pivotal year for the Saudi Arabian hospitality industry. The launch of tourist visas in September 2019 marked the Kingdom’s intention to become a global tourism destination and we are proud to be bringing together the tourism officials, hotel owners and operators working to make this a reality”.

Expressing his honour at hosting SHIC for the third consecutive year, Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Issa, Chairman of Dur Hospitality in turn stated that the rising number of visitors to Saudi Arabia has paved way for quality, authenticity and variety among the Kingdom’s hospitality offering. “While the tourism industry continues to flourish and is expected to increase its contribution to the Kingdom’s GDP by 8% by 2030, we will continue to grow our diversified portfolio, which currently includes over 20 properties, operates 3047 rooms, in addition to several new projects underway.

Our expansion plans seek to keep up with the demand of the industry and utilize the increased potential it poses with an investment of SAR 1.5billion (US 400 million)  to almost double our portfolio within the next four years,” Mr. Al-Issa added.

Ahead of SHIC, HE Ahmad Al Khatib, President of SCTH, said: “The launch of Saudi Arabia’s first tourism visa marked a historic milestone in the implementation of Vision 2030 and the development of the Kingdom’s tourism industry. Our aspiration is that by 2030, tourism will comprise more than 10% of Saudi Arabia’s GDP, attracting 100 million annual visits and creating as many as one million new jobs. Today, we are in an exciting position at the beginning of this journey and we are working closely with the hospitality industry to harness the full potential of Saudi’s tourism sector”.

Within the first month of launching the visa, more than 55,000 tourist visas were issued, providing a glimpse into the huge latent potential of the sector.

John Pagano, CEO of The Red Sea Development Company, added: “The uptake of the new e-visa demonstrates the widespread interest global travellers have in visiting Saudi Arabia. The e-visa creates opportunities for guests of the Red Sea Project to visit other parts of the Kingdom – and vice versa – making it easier to experience the unique beauty of our destination and be part of our commitment to enhance the natural environment. Through its introduction, the government is again demonstrating its commitment to make tourism a key pillar of the Kingdom’s economy. Visitors from around the world will experience the warm hospitality that Saudi Arabia offers and discover an unexplored part of the world.”

Jerry Inzerillo, CEO, DGDA, said recent progress meant it was “a momentous time in this extraordinary country”.

He revealed: “We plan to break ground in January 2020 for Diriyah Gate, a mixed-use traditional urban community which celebrates the rich cultural history of Saudi Arabia. Diriyah Gate, Riyadh’s new global cultural and lifestyle destination, will be home to leading luxury and lifestyle retail brands as well as over 100 cafés and restaurants. With hospitality, leisure, culture, education and entertainment assets in our development plans, we’re hoping to attract millions of tourists who will fall in love with Diriyah”.

According to SCTH, more than 150,000 new hotel rooms will be built in Saudi Arabia over the next three years, around 30% of which will be government funded while 70% will be driven by the private sector.

Numerous international operators have signified their commitment to the Kingdom.

“With the direction Saudi Arabia’s tourism industry is heading, tourism is expected to rise across existing and new segments fuelling demand for a variation of new accommodation options, example, family friendly hotels including mid-scale and luxury resorts, and extended-stay hotels,” remarked Pascal Gauvin, MD, India, Middle East and Africa for IHG. “We are in active discussions with strategic partners to bring new brands from our global brand portfolio, such as Regent Hotels and Resorts, Six Senses and Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, to the Kingdom to cater to these tourists’ diverse needs and preferences.”

Millennium Hotels and Resorts recently revealed its goal to operate a hotel in every region across Saudi Arabia, targeting 25 hotels in the Kingdom by 2025.

Millennium Hotels and Resorts MEA CEO Kevork Deldelian said: “We have been operating in Saudi Arabia for five years now, with nine hotels in our portfolio. We are already seeing increased business from the new tourist visas and are committed to playing a significant role in providing hotels across the Kingdom to accommodate this increasing demand”.

The SHIC programme will address various topics impacting the future growth of the hospitality sector, from asset management and franchising to sustainable luxury and artificial intelligence. There will also be case studies on mega projects, leadership panels, roundtables and a Three-Minute Pitch to Owners, during which leading brands will present their latest lodging products and loyalty programmes.

Meanwhile, on day one of SHIC, the Global Restaurant Investment Forum (GRIF) KSA programme will run concurrently, showcasing the most innovative home-grown and international restaurant concepts transforming the F&B sector in Saudi Arabia.

H.E. Mothanna Gharaibeh inaugurates BIGO Technology’s Amman office, opening doors to AI and more employment opportunities

• Office inaugurated by H.E. Mothanna Gharaibeh, Minister for Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship
• Singaporean Internet company looks to drive Artificial Intelligence skills and adoption in Jordan
• The company aims to hire 50 AI experts to be based in Jordan and serve the region
Amman-Jordan: 17 November 2019: BIGO Technology (BIGO), a Singapore-based Internet technology company powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), has opened a new office in Amman, Jordan. The office was inaugurated by His Excellency Mothanna Gharaibeh, Jordan’s Minister for Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship. BIGO executives in attendance included Mr. Mike Ong, Vice President for Government Relations, and Mr. Jackson Liu, General Manager of Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
BIGO’s first office in Jordan will serve as an additional regional hub to interact and engage with users and stakeholders, ensure a high-tech corporate presence in Jordan, and advance AI skills among Jordanian youth. It will improve products, and increase employment opportunities for technology professionals within the country.
His Excellency Mothanna Gharaibeh, said: “BIGO has made the first step in fulfilling their commitment to Jordan, and we look forward to their future investment in the upskilling and hiring of technology and AI professionals in Jordan. This investment aligns well with initiatives in Jordan such as the ‘One Million Jordanian Coders’ programme, which will bring Jordanians free three-month training sessions and online courses in coding and internationally-recognised certification. As Jordan advances towards our digital future, we are enthusiastic about the role that visionary technology companies such as BIGO will play.”
BIGO currently has over 69 technical patents and over 414 patents are under the process of application. As a fast-growing Singapore company, BIGO now has five R&D centres around the globe, and employs over 250 people in the MENA region alone. Worldwide, BIGO has more than 400 million monthly active users across its applications and services, a significant percentage of whom are in the MENA region.
The Jordanian government has been a keen supporter of BIGO for its plan and presence both in the Hashemite Kingdom and across the wider region. In fact, earlier this year BIGO hosted His Excellency Mothanna Gharaibeh at its headquarters in Singapore, where discussions centred around the expansion possibilities in Jordan, and upskilling of youth in preparation for the fourth digital revolution.
Mr. Mike Ong of BIGO said: “At BIGO, we strongly believe that it is our responsibility to invest in the future wherever we operate. Jordan is on a quest to become the digital hotspot in the region. Our expertise in AI will help support Jordan’s vision and assist in developing an environment that nurtures and enhances digital skills and capabilities to build a better future.”
For BIGO, the Middle East region is ripe with opportunity for the consumption and development of its applications. It will also assist in developing the skills and talent of Arab youths and empower them to conceptualize and build a more productive future.
Mr. Jackson Liu of BIGO said: “We believe that establishing the BIGO office in Jordan is a strategic move due to the diversity on offer, in relation to language skills, cultural similarities to that of the region and an IMF classification of ‘Highly Developed’. We are committed to investing and developing human capital, and we have developed a comprehensive recruitment plan. Our objective is to focus more on hiring technology professionals so we can contribute to the vision of Jordan.”
The office in Jordan is the second BIGO office in the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region after Egypt. The company has earlier announced plans of hiring 50 AI experts to be based in Jordan and serve the region.
