Shawarmer Launches New “Save It!” Social Responsibility Campaign to Raise National Awareness for Tackling the Growing Food Waste Issue • Year-Long Initiative to Promote Finding Actionable Solutions to Saudi Food Waste Issue • University Students to Compete to Run Shawarmer-Funded National Education Campaign

The Shawarmer restaurant chain is marking its 20th anniversary by launching the “Shawarmer for Social Responsibility Save It!” campaign, the most ambitious and comprehensive social impact program in company history designed to help tackle the growing food waste issue in Saudi Arabia.

The new Save It! campaign from Shawarmer, one of the largest and fastest growing Saudi owned and operated restaurant chains, is a year-long initiative designed to draw attention to and provide actionable solutions to Saudi’s food waste issue. The program will engage youth, families, the restaurant industry and stakeholders across the entire “farm to table to landfill” ecosystem to take responsibility for helping tackle a serious issue that has far-reaching impact on Saudi society.

Saudi ranks number one in the world in total food wasted. Statistics released in a new survey by the Saudi Grain Organization estimates that 33% of all food in the country ends up in garbage bins. That’s more than 4 million tons annually with a value of SR 12 billion.

“People don’t realize the serious impact of our food waste issue. The economic value of what goes into Saudi trash bins every day is staggering,” said Mr. Abdullah Zeid Alshabanat, Head of the National Program for Food Lost and Waste. “But most importantly, our Islamic values urge against it.”

“As a homegrown Saudi restaurant group, we have both an opportunity and responsibility to help contribute to a real and lasting solution to our nation’s food waste issue,” said Abdulmohsin Al Rabiah, CEO of Innovative Foods, Shawarmer’s parent company.

“We are launching a series of internal programs and investing heavily in new technology to minimize wasted food across our supply chain and 92 locations. But we also know with our national reach and 20-year history, we have an opportunity to help educate and motivate our customers, employees and industry partners to do something truly unique and special to make a real impact on reducing food waste,” added Iyad Al Rasheed, Shawarmer Director of Operations.

The Save It! initiative will kick off with a competition among Saudi university students, with teams competing to take part in an intensive three-day marketing challenge. Aspiring participants can register their ideas for a Save It! campaign on the Shawarmer.com website.

Shawarmer will work with university partners and marketing industry experts to select the top 15 teams to join the three-day competition where they will work closely with a range of leading experts in advertising, marketing, social responsibility and environmental issues to develop a final campaign. At the end of the competition, the winning team will get the opportunity to show their creative thinking and marketing expertise to all of Saudi, with Shawarmer funding their effort to run a national food waste education and awareness campaign.

“What better way to kick off our Save It! program then to harness the power, energy and creative inspiration of our Saudi youth. What makes this program special is that not only will we invest in a national education campaign targeting a very real social issue, but we are also investing in the future of our young people,” said Faisal Al Rasheed, Director of Marketing for Shawarmer.

Shawarmer, known for its creative and unique marketing campaigns, is asking potential Save It! competitors to find a creative answer to a simple question: Are You Ok with This Issue?

“We know our customers and we know Saudi youth care about building our future society together. We know that when they see the real magnitude of our national food waste crisis and the impact it has on so many people, they will not be OK with it. They will want to get involved. They will want to work with us to help build a campaign that will inspire Saudi’s across the country to join the cause,” Al Rasheed added.

The Save It! university marketing competition will run through mid-April when winners will be awarded at a special industry forum hosted by Shawarmer with key stakeholders, influencers and decision makers uniting for a special Saudi food waste summit. Phase II of the Save It! campaign will be announced at the close of that summit.

The General Culture Authority and the British Council celebrate successful conclusion of first-ever Creative Futures Forum in Saudi Arabia #CreativeFutures #ملتقى_الإبداع_الثقافي

The General Culture Authority and the British Council are celebrating the successful conclusion of the first ever Creative Futures Forum in Riyadh, which convened from 03-04 February at the King Fahad Cultural Centre. The two-day event attracted over 200 delegates, including key decision makers, arts professionals and students from a variety of creative industries across the Gulf and UK. The forum featured an impressive
line-up of 32 speakers from 10 countries, who covered a broad range of topics and discussed the social and economic impact of the creative economy in the Gulf.

The two-day event was officially opened on Sunday, 03 February 2019 by The General Culture Authority’s CEO, Eng. Ahmad Almaziad, and the British Council’s Chief Executive, Sir Ciaran Devane and marked the first time the organisations have collaborated together on an international level.

The second and final day opened with an exciting creative activity led by Simon Sharkey from the Necessary Space Theatre Company for delegates to give both sides of their brain a workout, challenging them to follow a complex pattern using both hands. During his talk, Simon Sharkey, formerly of the National Theatre of Scotland, drew interesting parallels between the transformation of the Scottish art scene over the last 20 years and the significant development of the burgeoning art scene in Saudi as the country undergoes major changes.

The second session of Day 2 featured a presentation by Dr. Patricia Kaszynska, a Research Fellow at Innovation and Insights Hub, the University of the Arts London, and focused on the importance of research in really helping arts and culture professionals understand audiences’ needs and the impact of their work. It highlighted the importance of co-creating between artists, arts and culture institutions and audiences, stating that programmes should not be created in a vacuum but developed with communities.

Final sessions touched on examples from skills development programmes from across the Gulf and sharing an employers’ perspective of what employers look for when hiring new recruits. Most importantly they facilitated the sharing of knowledge and ideas between Saudi and the GCC and discussed how they can work collaboratively for mutual benefit and growth of the creative industries in both the UK and the GCC.

Eng. Ahmad Almaziad, CEO of the General Cultural Authority said, “This was a powerful moment for the progression of the creative industry in Saudi Arabia bringing the attention of over 200 professionals and students passionate about the arts and culture to Riyadh, to discuss, debate and see for themselves the exciting potential and talent that is currently emerging in the Kingdom. We look forward to more projects with the British Council and all of the Gulf partners who attended this forum.”

The British Council’s Country Director in Saudi Arabia, Amir Ramzan, said: “We are extremely proud of how successful the Creative Futures Forum has been and are delighted with the overwhelmingly positive response from attendees, who had an opportunity to shape and develop the vision and plans for the cultural sector and contribute to its future. The importance of arts and culture cannot be underestimated, particularly its impact on the economy and on society’s well-being and health. We would like to thank the General Cultural Authority for collaborating with us and hope that we have inspired a future generation to pursue a career in the creative industries.”

The British Council in Saudi Arabia has recently introduced its expanded International English Language Testing System (IELTS) offering. Computer-Delivered (CD) IELTS is now offered

The British Council in Saudi Arabia has recently introduced its expanded International English Language Testing System (IELTS) offering. Computer-Delivered (CD) IELTS is now offered, meaning that students now have the option of taking the exams by computer as well as on paper. With CD IELTS, the British Council can assist an even greater number of Saudi citizens and residents, many located in remote areas. CD IELTS is convenient and secure, with the added convenience of faster results. Students can book in their speaking, listening, reading and writing modules to suit their busy lives.

“The flexibility and convenience of CD IELTS enable us to do even more to help the Kingdom achieve the goals of Vision 2030,” said Keshav Sreedharan, the British Council’s Director of Exams in Saudi Arabia. “To make the most of Saudi Arabia’s economic potential, its workforce must speak the language of the global economy: English.”

As Vision 2030 continues to attract unprecedented levels of foreign investment, the need to learn and speak English in Saudi Arabia is increasingly urgent. The British Council enjoys an unrivalled position to both help Saudis build their English ability and objectively demonstrate this ability to employers — a growing majority of which require proof of English competency from all potential recruits.

With over three million tests taken around the world in the past year, IELTS has strengthened its position as the world’s leading English language test for study, work, and migration purposes. As a secure and reliable indicator of a test taker’s English language ability, IELTS continues to be valued and trusted as an indicator of English language proficiency. The test is already used by over 10,000 organisations globally.

“We work hard to provide a seamless test experience, with our number-one priority being to ensure test takers are supported throughout their IELTS journey,” added Mr.

Sreedharan. “This includes specialist guidance from our helpful and highly professional staff, as well as relevant tools given to test takers to help them prepare for the test.”

Over the past 3 years alone, around 150,000 tests have been delivered in Saudi Arabia by the British Council, of which about 90,000 were taken by Saudi nationals. A huge proportion of these apply for courses abroad – meaning thousands of Saudis are travelling to top colleges every year to receive the best in education in medicine, engineering, IT and numerous other subjects. Online learning has also grown, evidenced by more than 50,000 students who have taken the IELTS MOOC (massive open online courses) from Saudi Arabia over the last 2 years.

awarding of the “Orden de Mayo al Mérito en el Grado de Gran Oficial” to Dr. Haitham Bouzo in appreciation and recognition of his efforts in supporting the Malvinas Islands Question

The Question of the Malvinas Islands

The Question of the Malvinas Islands is a priority issue of the Argentine foreign policy, reflected on a constitutional mandate and expressed as a state policy that binds all the Argentine people. Since the islands were seized by force by the British in 1833, expulsing the legitimate Argentine authorities and populating the islands with its own colonizers, Argentina has claimed to recover its full sovereignty over these territories, in accordance with International Law and respecting the way of life of the people of the Malvinas Islands. It is the conviction of the Argentine Government that the matter can only be solved peacefully by bilateral negotiations with the Government of the United Kingdom.

This is the reason for which, at the multilateral level, the Argentine Government continues to reaffirm its legitimate sovereign rights over the archipelagos and maritime spaces in dispute, urging – with the support of the international community – the United Kingdom to resume the negotiations that will allow finding a peaceful and definitive solution to the controversy.

Latest developments

During the last years, President Macri has relaunched the relationship with the United Kingdom in a variety of aspects, including -under the sovereignty safeguard formula- those related to the South Atlantic. In this last aspect, a substantive and constructive dialogue has been promoted with the intention of identifying areas of mutual interest, seeking to generate the climate of confidence necessary for the resumption of the negotiations on sovereignty.

In this sense, a wide variety of mutual interest actions have been approached between the two governments ever since: 1) The facilitation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the initiative to identify the remains of the Argentine soldiers buried in the Darwin cemetery, Islas Malvinas, under the legend “Argentine soldier only Known by God; 2) The resumption of scientific cooperation for the conservation of fisheries resources in the South-West Atlantic, holding a meeting on May and November 2018 of the Scientific Subcommittee of the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission in Buenos Aires and London, respectively; 3) Furthermore, in order to promote greater connectivity of the Islands with the Argentine mainland and to intensify the links between the continental Argentines and the inhabitants of the islands, in November 2018 the Governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom reached an understanding so that the LATAM company operates an additional Malvinas Islands air service (to the existing Punta Arenas / Río Gallegos / Islas Malvinas service), departing from the city of San Pablo (Brazil), with two monthly stopovers in the argentine city of Cordoba.
