District Cooling: Unlocking the Potential of Energy Efficiency

Buildings are the largest source of energy demand globally and are central focus in addressing climate change. Heating, cooling, and powering residential, commercial, and government buildings consume 40% of all energy produced worldwide, and as much as 70% in the Middle East. Under the extreme peak summer conditions, HVAC systems are no longer a luxury, rather a necessity to keep key sectors operating.

There are key trends shaping the HVAC sector in Saudi –a greater drive for adopting designs that are energy efficient, the adoption of higher energy performance units and components in order to comply with energy performance standards created by SASO/SEEC and a strong anticipation of growth in residential unit’s sales due to new housing programs.

The global strategy consulting firm Booz & Co has estimated that District Cooling systems are able to reduce up to 25-30% of the cooling requirements of Saudi by 2030.

District cooling (DC), a centralized way to produce and distribute cooling energy solutions for industrial and real estate sectors, is seen one of the most  viable and cost effective  HVAC solution for urban cities with dense populations.  This centralized system eradicates the requirement for a separate system in each building and also provides more economic and environmental benefits than other solutions. This central grid enables adoption of renewable energy sources (such as solar, thermal and biomass) which otherwise would have been difficult to realize in individual buildings.

District Cooling also helps utilize local energy sources and keeps energy earnings in local communities. It increases building space as the system frees up space for rent to generate profits or use rooftops as gardens, while it also reduces maintenance and operating costs, as consumers only pay for what they use. Because it’s a large central system, the total installed capacity is much less than sum of individual cooling loads due to diversity in peak loads, occupancy, usage etc. that would also mean higher utilization of installed capacity.

How A Saudi Company Is Innovating District Cooling Technology

The circumstances of customers, availability of load pattern, tariff pattern, building pattern makes it smart to craft a solution targeting specific outcomes. However many equipment suppliers have limited offering that traps the customer in one size fits all.

A much wider portfolio of solution elements varying from energy sources such as steam, oil, gas, electricity (or) compression technology such as screw, centrifugal (or) methods of heat rejection such as air-cooled/convertible/water-cooled, distinguishes Al Salem Johnson Controls (YORK) from others. Depending on the situation the Company can offer appropriate tailor-made solution to engineers/consultants.

Dr. Anwar Hassan, Vice President of Sales and Field Operations, Al Salem Johnson Controls (YORK), believes success of such proposals would lead to the adoption of the most appropriate solutions in accordance with modern technology, while contributing to the efficacy goals of the Kingdom’s National Transformation Program 2020. Some of the company’s leading projects in District Cooling include: The Two Holy Mosques, King Abdul Aziz Endowment tower in Makkah (Clock Tower), Jabal Omar area in Makkah, and the third terminal in the Jeddah King Abdul Aziz airport.

Historic experience of many societies in dealing with utilities and retaining high degree of competitiveness resulted in separation of production & distribution utility domains. Al Salem Johnson Controls (YORK) believes that the District Cooling concept is very much applicable. The investment in piping systems to distribute chilled water to facilities shall be regulated and charged as part of the general infrastructure. Issues and disagreements about it shall be arbitrated and regulated by industry bodies, allowing District Cooling companies to utilize the network. This will be beneficial to society apart from offering more competitive rates for consumers (just like power distribution companies or telephone companies), and as a result not everyone has to dig the country.

Setting fair and stable rates for District Cooling as a utility and for electricity and other forms of energy such as gas, diesel, etc., is a matter that requires the government to outline transparent procedures for settling rates between consumers and producers. Once this is in place & practiced consistently it will lead to boosting the rate of district energy adoption. Arbitration and standards bodies, in addition to mandatory procedures and processes for setting rates and arbitrating differences, are needed to boost the confidence of investors that the value will surely be harvested.

Dr. Anwar believes government regulations and initiatives can help place greater emphasis on life-cycle cost over initial cost. High efficiency solutions are usually more expensive in first cost and adopting them requires a clear understanding of the value they generate, articulating this value looks shaky if the elements making the value; like energy efficiency performance, power and water, are not on firm grounds. The adoption and implementation is impeded by the lack of clarity on a number of practical considerations, for example:

  • Determining whether treated sewage water is available;
  • When is it available at a particular location; and
  • At what rates it is going to be available.

These are difficult questions, but without clear transparent answer and commitment, and without such knowledge being publicly available, it is difficult for the energy efficiency conversations to progress. “Contractors will remain bound by the contract terms of the project and cannot be expected to advocate more energy efficient solutions unless they are financially incentivized to do so,” he added.

There’s wide acceptance among consultants and owners that District Cooling is an environmentally and fiscally favorable concept and practice. However wide adoption remains elusive. Thus industry awaits the standards & guidelines from government to activate their environmentally favorable decision.

District Cooling is mandatory in government developments requiring 15000 tons or more. We have seen admirable efforts by King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) promoting and offering financial grants for the development, research and commercialization of products and solutions supporting the use of renewable energy in HVACR. This is appreciated by companies that wish to play a role in advanced environmental solutions.

The UNEP (UN Environment body) report highlights “District Energy (DE) Champion Cities” which includes Dubai, UAE, as a single largest city adopting District Cooling in the world.  The report highlights that this solution is a part of broader efforts to shift away from fossil fuel to renewable energy technology while saving energy bills.  For example, Kuwait could reduce energy usage by 46 percent if it implements a comprehensive system of DE. DE involves a district cooling and heating, biomass, biogas, geothermal exchange, combined heat and power.

LG launches “it’s your turn to save” campaign, to support the latest technology and saving energy solutions

As a support to the “#لتبقى” (To stay) campaign launched by the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center, and in line with the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision aimed at creating a sustainable economy by adopting energy efficient solutions, LG, the leader in the innovation of the latest energy conservation solutions, has introduced dual-input technology – DUAL INVERTER which has showed astonishing results, compared to the performance of conventional air conditioners.

The results of the trials were reviewed during LG’s event at the Shaker Academy, in the presence of representatives of LG Electronics and Shaker Group, in addition to the social media ambassador of the campaign “Abdullah Al-Subaie” and media representatives. LG had presented a number of air conditioners with and without the DUAL INVERTER technology to compare air conditioners, assess and calculate the difference in usage and saving on electricity bills.

Eddie Jun, the President of LG Electronics in Saudi Arabia said: “LG is committed to its vision of a smart lifestyle with the introduction of next-generation technology and constantly strives to satisfy the consumers’ needs with products that will help them in their daily lives. This has always been LG’s main objective within the market and industry. Since rationalizing and optimizing energy consumption has become a strategic choice for all institutions and households, commitment to smart living and eco-friendly solutions has also been our main focus to create a rewarding lifestyle for everyone.”

He added :”The importance of this campaign comes at the right time as we are on the brink of summer, where most of the Kingdom’s regions are experiencing high temperatures, some even recording close to 48 degrees Celsius. In addition to the new electricity tariffs in the Kingdom, which have almost more than tripled, these developments require technical and innovative solutions. These solutions do not only include energy saving, but also the usage of devices that comply with the specifications and standards of Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization in the Kingdom and the guidance of the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center.”

Air conditioning consumes about 70% of the total electricity consumption in residential buildings, which is equivalent to more than two-thirds of the electricity consumed in the Kingdom. Especially since the standards for energy efficiency in the air conditioners in the Kingdom before modification were not the highest in the world. The specifications have been modified based on the Saudi Organization for Standardization, Metrology and Quality System, the Commercial Fraud Control System, internationally agreed technical standards and procedures that consider the local conditions of the private sector.

LG Electronics was one of the first companies to invest in technology to address environmental and energy issues. In an effort to provide residents within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia an optimal air conditioning solution that saves energy while maintaining cooling performance, LG is introducing its latest air conditioners using DUAL Inverter technology.

This new technology helps reduce energy consumption and is the ideal solution for air cooling, working at temperatures as high as 65 degrees Celsius. The solution offers 60% faster cooling with high energy efficiency, providing 53% energy consumption compared to conventional air conditioners. Other key features include: quiet and fast cooling, dual protection filter, automatic cleaning, and smart display which allows users to check the condition of the air conditioner easily. It is also Wi-Fi friendly and compatible with smart applications on mobile phones.

  • BIC supports Liberty’s broad vision of the future of F1, announced this weekend

BIC, Sakhir – Following the conclusion of the Formula 1 2018 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, Arif Rahimi, Chairman of Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), said:

“I congratulate Sebastian Vettel and Scuderia Ferrari on a superb victory in yet another enthralling night race at BIC.

“The BIC continues to attract fans from across the region and beyond for our biggest event of the year, with 33,000 in attendance for today’s race. We have been particularly encouraged by the popularity of the Paddock Club, with sales up 15% this year.

“This weekend also saw Liberty announce its blueprint for the future of F1. We are hugely supportive of the aim to put the fan experience at the centre of the sport and we have already seen the first signs of that coming to fruition this weekend. In particular, we are proud that Bahrain was chosen as the venue for the global launch of Pirelli Hot Laps, which was an incredible experience for those lucky fans. We believe that this is just the start of a new and exciting era for F1, with the fans right at the forefront of the sport.

“I offer my sincerest gratitude to those who have contributed to the success of the weekend. In particular, I thank the participating teams across all the race series, the team here at the BIC, our colleagues at the FIA and Formula One Management, and of course the fans.”

Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of Bahrain International Circuit, added:

“I congratulate all those who have contributed to such a spectacular race weekend, with a fitting nail-biting conclusion.

“In a weekend which has seen much talk on the future of F1, I also believe in the importance of recognising and appreciating its history. 50 years ago this weekend, we lost the legendary Jim Clark. The two-time World Champion will always be remembered as a true great of the sport and without doubt inspired future generations to take up motorsport.

“Following another breath-taking weekend of racing and entertainment, I thank all those involved for making it such a success. As ever, this would not have been possible with the support of the many Government ministries involved, so I thank them for all their efforts. I also thank my team here at the BIC for working so tirelessly over the last few months to put this great event together. Lastly, I also acknowledge the tremendous support of our partners and sponsors.”

Sebastian Vettel powered Ferrari to a sensational victory on Sunday night in a drama-filled Formula 1 2018 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, held under the bright lights of BIC.

Vettel overcame a threatening challenge from Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes who tried to chase him down and steal the chequered flag late on. But Vettel was able to hold on to the slightest of advantages despite a slower car over the race’s last few laps.

The German eventually won by just 0.699 seconds. He completed the 57-lap sprint after starting from pole in a total race time of 1 hour 32 minutes 01.940 seconds, taking the chequered flag as a brilliant display of fireworks lit up the desert sky.

“I was not in control, I thought Valtteri would catch me,” Vettel said afterwards. “I nursed the tyres and it worked, but only just!”

The win was a record fourth in Sakhir in Vettel’s illustrious career, and also his 49th overall in 200 grand prix starts. The result was also his second triumph in a row to start the 2018 season after also winning the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne last month.

Vettel and Bottas were joined on the podium by reigning World champion Lewis Hamilton, who also had an exceptional drive after starting from ninth. Hamilton was classified 6.512 seconds behind first place.

Presenting the top three their respective trophies in the podium ceremony were His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister. Also on hand were Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Hisham Al Jowder, Bahrain Motor Federation President Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, and Gulf Air CEO Kresimir Kucko.

Pierre Gasly of Toro Rosso had a fantastic race on his Bahrain debut in a Formula 1 car. He finished fourth but was a massive 1 minute 02.234 seconds behind first place.

Kevin Magnussen of Haas was an impressive fifth 1:15.046 back, and Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth in his Renault 1:39.024s behind. The McLaren pair of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne followed, while Marcus Ericsson of Sauber and Esteban Ocon of Force India rounded out the top 10 and the final points takers – each of whom were a lap off pace.

Despite Vettel’s win, it wasn’t all smiles for Ferrari as Kimi Raikkonen had a shock exit 35 laps in. The Finn had knocked down a mechanic during his second pit-stop and didn’t continue from there.

Red Bull Racing, meanwhile, had a disastrous night with both star drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen ending their campaigns in the race’s opening stages.

Ricciardo suddenly stopped out on track and hopped out of his Red Bull after just two laps. Little was known right after his retirement as to what had happened to his car, but Red Bull later revealed it was due to a suspected electrical engine issue. Verstappen had a collision with Hamilton on lap one, which resulted in a damaged left-rear tyre. He pitted for a change but the damage proved to be too much.

Completing the overall classification from 11th to 17th, respectively, were Carlos Sainz of Renault, Sergio Perez of Force India, Brendon Hartley of Toro Rosso, Charles Leclerc of Sauber, Romain Grosjean of Haas, and Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin of Williams.

The FIA Formula 1 World Championship resumes next weekend with the Chinese Grand Prix.

Heritage of Innovation in the laundry category continues with LG’s revolutionary TWINWASH Technology Need for large capacity washing machines emerging as a key trend

With a proven track record for offering customers premium lifestyles through quality products and service deliverance, LG is always striving to bring a brighter future for all its consumers. Over the year’s LG has caught the attention of today’s global consumers by delivering value that exceeds customer expectations.

One of the key trends that has caught the attention of reviewers world-wide is the need for large capacity washing machines by consumers. Consumers are open to accommodating larger capacity washing machines paving way for leading home appliance manufacturers like LG to keep upto to the innovation trend.

Commenting on this emerging trend, Kevin Cha, President, LG Electronics, Middle East & Africa said, “With larger capacity washers and their range and popularity grows, the industry is keeping a close watch on whether the increase in size affects reliability, wash performance or time. LG’s award winning TWINWASH™ technology has successfully managed to emerge as one among the top successful innovations while creating a new genre within the laundry industry.”

Several global reports have hailed LG as an industry leader time and time again. LG’s home appliances products have outperformed competitor brands when it comes to reliability, while consistently delivering industry firsts like LG’s award-winning TWINWASH™ laundry technologies. The innovation, performance and product longevity of TWINWASH has successfully carved a niche for LG as one of the most trusted appliance brands.

According to a leading U.S. consumer publication, appliance breakage rate estimates in the industry vary across each laundry category – ranging from 10 to 25 percent – based on testing for cleaning, water and energy efficiency, gentleness, speed and noise. LG laundry products earned top reliability scores with the lowest breakage rates – ranging as low as 6 to 14 percent – as compared with seven other major appliance brands of front-load washing machines & high efficiency top-load washing machines.

LG’s reliability builds a heritage of innovation in the laundry category. A key to LG’s washer dependability is direct drive motor technology pioneered by LG. The LG Direct Drive motor, attached directly to the washer’s drum, is designed to increase both performance and durability. The company was also first to introduce the LG TWINWASH system that combines two washers – a traditional front load washer and LG SideKick Pedestal Washer – so users can wash two loads at the same time or independently.

From washer type and size, to feature and price, only LG gives users the option to choose the LG TWINWASH system that’s perfect for them. Consumers can choose any LG front-load washer and add a LG SideKick to enjoy or upgrade an existing front-load model, manufactured after 2009, with an LG SideKick.

That’s not all the revolutionary LG SideKick can be added to select top-load systems for consumers who prefer that style. The LG SideKick pedestal washer is specifically designed to wash small laundry loads including intimates, delicates and active wear. And because the LG SideKick is placed in the pedestal to elevate the main front-load washer, users can enjoy more comfortable loading and unloading of those larger loads reserved for the main washer with less bending and lifting.

Other innovations that make LG laundry solutions best-in-class include: the mega capacity washers with the largest capacity washer in its class** at 5.8 cu. Ft., users can wash a king size comforter and full set of bedding in a single load, the TurboWash® powerful high-pressure nozzles save 30 minutes per load, the steam cleaning technology with LG’s TrueSteam® that gently but powerfully penetrates fabrics to help eliminate dirt, odors and wrinkles, while reducing allergens and last but not the least the 6Motion™ Technology that combines up to six different wash motions to provide a revolutionary cleaning experience.

The washing machine’s Energy Monitoring feature provides helpful data while LG’s proprietary HomeChat™ service is available in the 21kg system allowing users to physically text their washing machine to check the status or even start-up the cycle. The TWINWASH features an easy to use integrated control panel that gives access to everything one needs right at the fingertips.

Featuring cutting-edge washing machine technology, as well as a sleek, modern design – LG washing machines not only make the clothes look their best – they make the home look brilliant, too.

New models of the TWINWASH are being made available to consumers today across the Middle East & Africa region.
