New VMware Research: CEOs expected to be held accountable for cyber attacks damages, yet kept in the dark over significant data breaches

في ام وير

  • 48 per cent of IT leaders in KSA are not revealing cyber attacks to senior leadership
  • Only eight per cent of EMEA corporate leaders consider cyber security a priority to the detriment of driving a corporate initiative to rethink IT security
  • While more than a half of businesses expect a serious cyber attack to hit their organisation in the next 90 days

KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA, Riyadh — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility, today announces new findings from specialist market research agency Vanson Bourne that shows over a third (40 per cent) of IT Decision Makers (ITDMs) and almost two thirds (60 per cent) of office workers in KSA, believe the CEO should be held accountable for a significant data breach. However, (48 per cent) of ITDMs admitted to not actually disclosing a significant data breach to senior management.

This lack of full disclosure indicates that those most accountable for the business do not have the full picture when it comes to the risk posed by breaches. This is also reinforced by additional research sponsored by VMware and conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit earlier this year, which revealed that, just eight per cent of EMEA corporate leaders consider cyber security a priority for their business. As cyber attacks intensify and become more damaging for organisations, including a loss of intellectual property, competitive positioning, and customer data, the potential impact of this disconnect to performance and brand is significant.

Vulnerabilities call for a new approach to security

Businesses are coming under increasing threat from serious cyber attacks, with more than a half (52 per cent) expecting to be hit in the next 90 days.  With the complexities of an increasingly digital business world, current security methods may not be keeping pace. In fact, (29 per cent) of ITDMs in KSA believe one of the greatest vulnerabilities to their organisation to a cyber attack is threats moving faster than their defences.

“The disconnect between business leaders and IT decision makers is symptomatic of the underlying challenge faced as organisations seek to push boundaries, transform and differentiate, as well as secure the business against ever-changing threats”, commented Rasheed Al Omari, Business Solutions Strategist, MENA, VMware. “Today’s most successful organisations can move and respond at speed as well as safeguard their brand and customer trust. With applications and user data on more devices in more locations than ever before, these companies have moved beyond the traditional IT security approach which may not protect the digital businesses of today.”

People and processes are as much about the problem as technology

Some of the greatest vulnerabilities to an organisation’s security stem from within the organisation, with employees who are careless or untrained in cyber security the greatest security challenge their business faces (cited by 50 per cent of ITDMs in KSA). Today’s research also reveals the steps employees are willing to take to increase productivity. Almost half (44 per cent) use their personal device to access corporate data and almost a fifth (33 per cent) would risk being in breach of the organisation’s security to carry out their job effectively.

“Security is not just about technology. As the research shows, the decisions and behaviours of people will impact the integrity of a business,” comments Joe Baguley, CTO, VMware EMEA. “However, this can’t be about lock-down or creating a culture of fear. Smart organisations are enabling, not restricting, their employees – allowing them to thrive, adapt processes and transform operations to succeed.

“Forward thinking organisations understand that the reactive security of today is no longer doing its job of protecting applications and data,” concluded Baguley. “By taking a software-defined approach to IT that ensures security is architecture in to everything, these businesses have gained the flexibility required to both secure and succeed as a digital business.”

Speech by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark, H.E. Mr. Ole Frijs-Madsen at the Danish National Day celebrated on 19 May 2016.

دانمارك2

“Salam alaykum we marhaba bikum huna fi safaarat ad-Danimark”

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you on yet another beautiful night in Riyadh.

Before I start let me express my condolences and respect for victims and their families from the Egypt Air flight from Paris to Cairo. We are all touched by this terrible accident. The same goes for any casualties of war, terrorism, disease and natural disasters.

As many of you may have noticed we are celebrating Her Majesty – Queen Margrethe the 2nd’s – Birthday. Our celebration tonight takes place with four weeks delay.

There were two good reasons to postpone our National Day this year. First of all the weather would hopefully be more stable with less sandstorms and rain. Secondly and more substantially we had an important visit by THR the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of the Kingdom of Denmark earlier this year accompanied by three government ministers, 43 Danish companies and a delegation of 110 persons visiting Riyadh for 3 days.

Various new agreements and partnerships were signed and Danish competences within design, food, health, energy efficiency and clean energy solutions were presented to Saudi partners.

This very important visit along with other visits during the year underlines our constructive relations and cooperation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which has increased over the past years. The Kingdom has launched an ambitious Vision for 2030 with a number of decisive elements which sets clear targets for Saudi Arabia to meet future aspirations of a young and talented population. We wish every success for this initiative and Denmark stands ready to lend its support with know-how and best practice.

We are also happy to see women playing an increasingly important role in the Saudi society both at the workplace, in higher education and domestically. I have no doubt that women will be key drivers in the new vision for the Kingdom.

My country is proud to be co-hosting this week in Copenhagen the United Nations Conference “Women Deliver” which is the world’s largest global conference in the last decade on the health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women.

In actual fact over the last five years, the Danes have been elected three times by the United Nations World Happiness Report to be the happiest people on earth.

The happiest people on Earth is a title we Danes are very proud of, and we hope to illustrate it for you this evening, as we chose happiness as our main theme. But why are we so happy in our small kingdom of 6 million people? And what factors are essential for happy people around the world?

First of all welfare: a welfare model guarantees that people’s basic needs are met including healthcare, education and social benefits in case of unemployment. In our case welfare goes hand-in-hand with some of the highest income taxes in the world………and people are still happy….believe it or not!

Social trust: Denmark has the highest level of social trust in the world (together with our Scandinavian friends – Norway and Sweden).  Trust helps to create a comfortable, convenient society, a society that removes major worries of day-to-day life.

Freedom & security:  Freedom ensures that opportunities are not limited on the grounds of a person’s race, sexuality, religion or gender. In Denmark most people experience that they are able to control the course of their life.

They have the opportunity to take an education irrespective of their parent’s income; they can marry whomever they want, they can speak freely, travel freely and think freely.

Denmark is also the least corrupt country in the world, with the highest level of transparency. This has contributed to make our country on top of the best countries to conduct business in. Justice and fairness is one of the great happiness secrets!

Denmark is furthermore named one of the best places in the world to establish a family, with generous maternity leave, child allowance and excellent child care institutions where parents can safely place their kids. If your family is happy chances are that you will be happy as well!

So, at the end of the day happiness of people depends on various factors which every society can strive to achieve in the best way possible within their culture.

Finally we also thought that tonight we would link happiness with a little bit of geography. Copenhagen is of course known by most people as the capital city of Denmark. There are, however, many other important and nice cities in Denmark which we would like YOU to know.

This is why we have placed names and pictures of these cities close to the food stations so that you can learn and taste some different Danish flavours. Before you leave tonight you will all be familiar with not only Copenhagen, but also Århus, Ålborg, Odense and the beautiful island of Bornholm.

Before I conclude and leave you enjoying some good food and drinks I would like to thank all our Saudi partners in government and business sectors for their co-operation during the year. I – along with my team at the Embassy – highly appreciate the co-operation.

It is a pleasure to inform you that any excess food from tonight’s reception will be picked up by Saudi Food Bank Ita’am and served for underprivileged families.

I wish you all Happiness, good health and a great evening here at the Royal Danish Embassy.

Taiwan’s International Participation is Vital to Ensuring Global Health Security By Dr. Tzou-yien Lin Minister of Health and Welfare Republic of China (Taiwan)

تايوان

According to the WHO estimate released on April 21, 2014, a total of 774 lives were claimed in the SARS outbreak in 2003. Far beyond the nations where it claimed the most victims, SARS traumatized the world with vast economic disruptions, deeply impacting international trade and travel that year and in the nervous months that followed.

Yet such threats are far from over: emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola and MERS have followed. These are the threats we understand a little about – yet what we really have to fear are the threats we cannot name. Even as global health experts gather, new and unmapped outbreaks can spread rapidly across the globe. More rapidly than ever, arguably, as air travel statistics show that more people are flying, with more of the world than ever within a day’s travel.

Zika virus emerged in South America late last year, and has since swept across every continent, challenging disease control efforts worldwide. The World Health Organization in 2014 estimated that vector-borne diseases account for 17% of the global burden of all infectious diseases, killing up to 750,000 people each year. Dengue, the fastest-growing vector-borne disease, is endemic in more than 100 countries – with four out of ten people worldwide potentially at risk. Last year, Taiwan confirmed a total of 43,419 indigenous cases, which was one of the most severe dengue outbreaks since 1987. Since Zika virus is transmitted by the same mosquito species that transmits dengue virus, Taiwan also faces increased risk of a Zika virus outbreaks.

Because we know infectious diseases do not respect boundaries, Taiwan has fulfilled its International Health Regulations responsibilities since 2009, when we were officially included in the implementation framework. We have established an IHR Contact Point with WHO to enable regional and global responses to public health threats. We assessed and improved our surveillance and response capacities to meet the Annex 1B IHR core requirements in a timely manner. Taiwan closely monitors international trends to optimally promote and enhance health security. In response to Ebola in West Africa, we provided 100,000 sets of Personal Protective Equipment and donated US$1 million to international Ebola aid efforts in 2014. Since then, we organized four training workshops for Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asian health and laboratory workers to improve regional capacity to detect and respond to Ebola, MERS, dengue and Zika virus. Participants from 14 countries exchanged experiences and formed regional networks to address such public health threats.

Taiwan has expanded mosquito-related preparedness and response with four strategies: health system planning, prevention of Zika virus importation, border quarantine, and vector control measures. Yet better vector control, effective vaccines, and proper clinical management are still needed.

Our people also face pandemic and seasonal influenza threats. Previous outbreaks have demonstrated that seasonal influenza virus strains can pose major challenges to our health systems. Because the highest hospitalization rates are among senior citizens, we encourage annual seasonal influenza vaccination to achieve herd immunity.

As we continue to improve our influenza-related planning, we retain a global vision and work hard to maintain the widest possible international health networks. To bring together nations to promote global health security, prevent disease outbreaks, detect threats early and respond rapidly, the United States launched the Global Health Security Agenda with WHO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Its goals include consistent and widely supported standards like IHR, including the Performance of Veterinary Services Pathway and other health security frameworks. By adopting these frameworks, Taiwan promotes human medicine and veterinary collaborations and constructs a unified system for infectious disease control.

Nothing less than this multilateral and multi-sectoral approach is needed to fight infectious diseases. While we still hope for better alignment with the international community, we are reorganizing at home to pursue best policies and practices. We are establishing a national research institute for vector-borne diseases in southern Taiwan to integrate resources and assist local governments with prevention.

It is no news to this expert audience that a crisis anywhere easily and soon can become a problem everywhere. Global health demands that all populations have optimal capabilities to respond to such threats.

Taiwan will continue to pursue bilateral, multilateral and research cooperation. We can be relied on to assist our Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asian neighbors as they enhance their own response capacities. And for the reasons I have discussed, we will actively participate in international arenas.

Such participation ensures that global health security will never again have deadly blind spots due to blocked communication and a lack of transparency.
