Financial Technology Set to Transform Financial Services in Saudi Arabia Special Panel on Digital Ecosystem Planned for Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference

يورومني

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s financial sector is likely to encounter significant disruption from new financial technologies in the coming years, but could emerge stronger and more streamlined, according to experts gathering for the Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference this May.

Financial technology – or “FinTech” – is generating huge opportunities for banks, investors and new start-up companies around the world, but is also generating a new range of risks for central banks and financial institutions.

Progress on implementing FinTech in the Kingdom has been relatively slow until recently, but new initiatives designed to enhance the business environment, reform regulatory support and provide access to capital are helping to create a positive ecosystem for FinTech deployment in Saudi Arabia.

In a special panel at the Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference, senior experts from within the Kingdom and leading international companies will discuss the growing influence and impact of FinTech on the financial sector.

Mamdooh Al Sedairy, Chief Information Officer of Tadawul, will bring his experience in implementing and managing one of the world’s most sophisticated trading systems for the Saudi Stock Exchange. In 2014, Tadawul and NASDAQ began a major project to replace the SAXESS trading platform with NASDAQ’s latest trading platform, X-stream INET Trading, which was launched in September 2015. The new platform is fastest recorded trading engine in the world.

He will be joined by Frans van Eersel, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of dopay International, which provides a cloud-based payroll service that enables employers to calculate salaries and pay all employees – banked and unbanked – electronically.

“The financial service industry is reaching its ‘Uber moment’. The wide acceptance of smartphones, cloud-computing and technologies like blockchain are fundamentally changing the way financial services will be delivered. The disruptive nature of technology that we have already seen in so many industries is now reaching the financial service industry and is set to have a major impact. Banking as we know it today will never be the same again,” said Frans van Eersel.

The challenge to manage the issues that result from FinTech is an international one. In its global banking annual review, the consultancy firm McKinsey warned that banks face a “high-stakes struggle” to defend their business models against digital disruption.

It is estimated that some 20,000 FinTech start-ups and companies are operating in the global ecosystem, offering a range of services including online cash payments and securities trading, crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending, blockchain and digital identities.

The panel discussion at The Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference will be one of the best opportunities to date to understand the progress made on this key issue and the new wave of initiatives in progress to boost the growth of the Kingdom’s ecosystem.

The 2016 Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference is co-hosted with the Ministry of Finance and takes place on 3 and 4 May at the Al Faisaliah Hotel in Riyadh.

Student.com, the world’s leading marketplace for international student accommodation, today announced the launch of its Kingdom of Saudi Arabia operations as it continues to expand its international coverage.

The announcement comes in time as Student.com joins hundreds of exhibitors at Ta’leem 2016, the 5th annual International Exhibition and Forum for Education, held at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 12-14 April, 2016.

In an event centred on highlighting developments in the private sector, fostering international partnerships and enhancing students’ professional and technical aptitude through the effective use of educational resources, Student.com aims to promote its capabilities as a trusted and secure online booking platform that helps students from Saudi Arabia find their home in overseas markets including the United States.

Having recently raised $60 million to help international students find their perfect accommodation while studying abroad, Student.com is actively driving efforts towards expansion into new markets. Saudi Arabia offers a sizeable pool of students interested in studying abroad, particularly for the U.S education market. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 73,548 students from Saudi Arabia joined a higher education institution abroad in 2015, with the vast majority of them enrolling in English language programs in preparation for tertiary education. The British Council estimates that close to 60,000 students from KSA opted to study in the United States, illustrating the popularity of the United States among KSA students.

Witnessing bookings from students in 100 countries last year alone, Student.com growth is on an upward trajectory as the organization leverages from rising trends in student mobility. In the upcoming academic year Student.com will list properties in 426 cities in close proximity to more than 1,000 universities across the world.

As part of its commitment to the Saudi market, Student.com has appointed Ohoud Al Arifi, as Growth Manager, carrying with her vast experience in strategic planning and development. Student.com works with professional landlords only. Student.com engages in contractual agreements with every landlord listed on the booking platform, allowing the organisation to inspect properties beforehand and ensure student preferences and accommodation standards are met. Contractual agreements with landlords ensure added security, a key concern for international students looking for a safe place to live in a foreign country.

Malaysia Healthcare seeks to establish a stronger brand presence within the Middle East market, as well as to build greater relationships with Middle Eastern consumers and stakeholders, particularly in the service sector.

“We have conducted strategic assessments over the years and now have a more focused, niche strategy with a unique selling proposition for the Middle East. The Middle East market plays a key role in our development strategy, being one of our strongest markets, and we are vested in seeing how we can serve this market more efficiently,” commented Sherene Azli, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council.

Moving beyond conventional promotion of its value proposition of highly accessible and affordable quality healthcare, Malaysia Healthcare also strives to build sustainable collaborations in industry and G2G initiatives, to raise the development of the country’s healthcare travel industry to the next level.

Malaysia was recently awarded as the Top Country for Muslim Travel in 2015 by Master Card-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index. The country’s affordable treatments with Arabic speaking translators available upon request as well as its Muslim-friendly hospital environment are a sure appeal to the Middle Eastern. “As we forge ahead in our mission, Malaysia Healthcare also seeks to build sustainable collaborations, domestically and abroad, to further strengthen our healthcare propositions and to create higher degrees of accessibility to our healthcare services for citizens of the world. Malaysia’s standing as a Global Halal Hub gives it a niche appeal to markets with consumers seeking halal-compliant options and environments, not only for themselves but also for accompanying family members. This, coupled with the favourable exchange rate, makes Malaysia an ideal healthcare travel destination.” elaborated Ms. Sherene.

Partnering with Malaysia Healthcare for this Middle East agenda is KPJ Healthcare, a leading Malaysian provider for awards-winning healthcare services. The healthcare giant will feature specialists, general health practitioners and physiotherapists from some of their premier hospitals as part of the Malaysian entourage, to give conference attendees at both events the opportunity for one-on-one conversations about healthcare options in Malaysia.

Malaysia Healthcare has grown from strength to strength in the last few years. The country was named the “Medical Travel Destination of the Year” at the Medical Travel Awards 2015 by the International Medical Travel Journal, and “Best Country in the World for Healthcare” by International Living’s Global Retirement Index for three consecutive years since 2014. Malaysia was also honoured as the “2015 Public Private Partnership Medical Travel Destination of the Year” at the 8th Annual World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress in Orlando, Florida (USA) for its highly successful public-private partnerships and collaborations.

Over 850,000 international travellers arrived in Malaysia seeking healthcare services last year. Internationally, Malaysia has gained fast popularity for its highly accessible and affordable world-class quality care, which resulted in hospital revenues of more than RM900 million for the country in 2015.

“We strongly believe that Malaysia has the right mix: excellence in quality care, ease of accessibility and competitive affordability. To top it off, it is easy for travellers to communicate with health professionals here, where English is widely spoken, and matched with strong government backing and commitment from the private healthcare sector, Malaysia has everything it takes to achieve our ambition of becoming number one in the world for healthcare travel,” said Ms. Azli.

Additionally, Malaysia Healthcare recently launched the “Malaysia Loves You” campaign at the start of this year. The campaign aims to highlight Malaysia’s most unique qualities as a healthcare destination of choice, and includes an online competition which is open to all.
