Saudi Mobile Telecom Market Set For MVNO Boost Top Analyst Says Licensees Can Deliver “Better Choice and Variety” For Consumers; KSA’s CITC Expects MVNOs to Improve Value, Services and Competition

Mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) are gearing up to initiate positive change in Saudi Arabia’s telecommunications market.

The Saudi Communication and Information Technology Commission (CITC) recently qualified three consortia for MVNO licenses in a bid to stimulate competition and provide more choice. In a statement it said the licenses would improve the level of service, lower prices, enhance customer care, and increase job opportunities for citizens.

“MVNO scan be extremely nimble and focus on different segments of the market to deliver better choice and variety for consumers. Their likely impact in Saudi is potentially very promising, helping the telco industry achieve growth through new propositions and services,” said Matthew Reed, Principal Analyst and head of research for the Middle East and Africa at leading research organisation Informa.

Based on the Cellular Competition Intensity Index, the Saudi mobile market is already the most competitive in the Arab world. Mobile phone penetration stands at 181.6 per cent – nearly two subscriptions per individual – and the emerging broadband market offers huge growth opportunities for the Saudi telecoms industry.

According to figures presented by research firm Ipsos at the recent ArabNet conference, the Kingdom’s smartphone penetration rate stands at 63 per cent, which is among the highest in the world.

“Saudi Arabia boasts one of the youngest and most mobile-savvy populations on the planet. The potential to harness this technological advantage to innovate and compete on both a regional and global scale is extremely exciting, and definitely something we want to be a part of,” said Faisal Al Bannai, CEO, Axiom Telecom, which was qualified for an MVNO license as a part of the Axiom Mobile consortium.

“More than ever before, mobile technology is a vital enabler of life across the Kingdom. We are determined to pull out all the stops to launch best-in-class services that are cutting-edge, inclusive and, crucially, built to cope with the rich user experience demanded by Saudi Arabia’s highly discerning smartphone and tablet users.”

Axiom Telecom was qualified by the CITC for an MVNO license, and is now engaged in the final phase of the process. The company has a forward-looking strategy that will be bolstered by a significant retail presence providing a direct and influential link to a wide target audience.

The company currently boasts 120 branches and selling points throughout the Kingdom, as well as 4,000 indirect sales channels (2,000 of which are dealt with through direct distribution).

United Nations and Shanghai Women’s Federation showcase commitment to women’s empowerment

Women’s economic empowerment is a hot topic in China – which is home to 29 million female entrepreneurs. According to a Grant Thornton report, the country has the world’s highest proportion of women in senior management positions. However, despite Chinese businesses’ willingness to improve gender ratios, women still lack equal opportunities with their male counterparts in many sectors.

It is widely accepted that corporations need to push women’s career development more systematically, rather than depending on government-imposed quotas. And the theme of women’s development and empowerment is being highlighted at an upcoming women’s business and trade initiative in Shanghai, which has two of the most well-known global organisations amongst its supporters.

The United Nations (UN) and Shanghai Women’s Federation (SWF) have both confirmed their participation at the Women in Leadership (WIL) Economic Forum China on September 26th and 27th 2013, hosted and organised by French deal facilitation group naseba.

The UN is the world’s largest international organisation, best known for promoting and facilitating cooperation in international security, economic development and social progress. The SWF aims to represent and protect women’s rights and interests, and promote equality between men and women.

In 2009, the UN launched its Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP). They are seven principles offering guidance on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community, and include: establishing highlevel corporate leadership for gender equality; treating all women and men fairly at work by respecting and supporting human rights and non-discrimination; and promoting education, training and professional development for women.

The SWF was founded in 1950, and is a mass organisation striving for women’s further advancement under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. It has members from: Shanghai Women Employees’ Committee trade unions, Shanghai March 8th Red Banner Pacesetters Association, Shanghai Women Engineers Association, Shanghai Women Doctors Association and Shanghai Women Lawyers Association.

The Annual WIL Economic Forum China aims to highlight the achievements of women’s economic empowerment and leadership. It provides a platform for trade associations from East Asia, South East Asia, the Indian sub-continentand the Gulf region to meet and discuss partnerships and expansion plans with women-led businesses in China.

The two days feature a number of powerful speakers, including Susan Moore, Founder and CEO of Gender Economics.com (Australia). When asked about her expectations for gender diversity and workplace inclusion in the future, she said: “I think that we will see a shift away from the human resources view of diversity and move more fully into a business transformation view as organisations increasingly recognise that they need to compete in a global market. This global market increases the need for companies to recognise a full range of diversity including the complexities of cross cultural management.

ACF By-line The Dangers of Counterfeit Cartridges -What’s in your Printer?

By Laszlo Czinege, General Manager, Printing & Personal Systems, HP Saudi Arabia

As global trade and growing access to the internet make the world a more connected place, customers are becoming more wary and are questioning deals which seem “too good to be true” and could suggest that the product in question isn’t genuine. However, when it comes to the global trade in counterfeit goods, there is always more work to be done. Businesses and consumers need to be on the lookout for fake products which cheat them out of money in return for poor quality, non-genuine products.

In response to this, leading brands like HP work hard to protect customers from fraudsters whose fake products damage the trust between businesses and their customers, as well as creating potentially harmful products. Over the last four years across EMEA, HP has conducted nearly 1,000 investigations, resulting in over 800 enforcement actions (raids by authorities) and the confiscation of almost nine million units of fake printing products from the region, including ink and laser cartridges.

In Saudi Arabia, one example of this is the seizure of 67,000 illicit items including fake HP printing supplies, packaging, laptop adaptors and manufacturing equipment. With on-site support from HP, authorities seized around 55,000 finished counterfeit printer cartridges for HP printers and more than 5,000 fake laptop adaptors.

Counterfeiting is not just a problem for HP and other brands whose intellectual property rights are infringed, it also harms customers who use printing for their business or at home. Businesses across all industries rely on high quality printed documents and images to shape their reputation, generate new business and communicate with their clients and partners. These businesses, from local hospitals and schools to international banks are being targeted by counterfeiters and sold sub-standard ink or toner cartridges.

Saudi Arabia

According to recent research across various countries conducted by Forrester, nearly one-fifth (17 percent) of organisations in Saudi Arabia have been offered or purchased counterfeit printer cartridges. 1

This is having a damaging effect on businesses: Saudi Arabian respondents cited print quality and inconsistency as the leading indicators of counterfeit cartridges (85 percent). Almost two-thirds (62 percent) said they found out the cartridges were counterfeit because the printer failed frequently.

Counterfeit cartridges are also damaging relationships and trust between Saudi businesses and the suppliers who unknowingly sell fake printing supplies to their customers: over three-quarters (77 percent) said they felt angry when they found out that these cartridges were counterfeit and 80 percent would even consider changing their supplier if they discovered that they sell counterfeit cartridges.

###

Rather than saving money by providing a similar product at a lower cost, counterfeit printing supplies can actually cost businesses and consumers money. They are more likely to fail or leak which can ruin a printer and may invalidate its warranty, meaning customers may have to pay for repairs or even buy a new printer. Furthermore, HP Original supplies not only provide consistency and higher quality but they use ink more effectively: a recent study by Buyers Laboratory found that on average, Original HP ink cartridges print up to 50 percent more pages than the tested refilled or remanufactured alternatives.2

It is important that legitimate brands protect their investment in research and development so they can continue to create innovations which will benefit customers.  Brands like HP want to pursue counterfeiters, whilst working side by side with alternative manufacturers who create legitimate cartridges. There is an important distinction to be made between these two distinct groups:

Counterfeiters produce refilled or remanufactured print cartridges packed in fake reproductions of branded packaging, which are meant to mislead consumers into believing that they are buying genuine products from a certain manufacturer. These illegal products are very different to legitimate refilled or remanufactured cartridges which are clearly marked as such and are sold in packaging which is very different to the packaging of the original manufacturer.

As with all original brands when compared to fakes, the main sign that a cartridge is a genuine product is the high quality and consistent prints it produces as well as unopened packaging in good condition. However, there are other factors which could indicate that a cartridge you are buying is not the genuine original that it claims to be.

To make it even simpler for customers to protect themselves against fakes, HP has created innovative Authentication Software, which customers can download and install on their PCs,, as well as holographic labels and Quick Response (QR) codes which customers can validate using a web-enabled smartphone or online via www.hp.com/go/ok.3

Laszlo Czinege, General Manager, Printing & Personal Systems, HP Saudi Arabia, said: “The war against counterfeiters is constantly evolving and at HP we are working in partnership with other global brands and international organisations to find new ways to tackle counterfeiting across the world. Our priority is protecting our customers from the illegal and deceitful actions of counterfeiters who produce poor-quality and potentially harmful products in order to generate easy profit from unsuspecting customers.”
