The Ambassador of Canada to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dennis Horak today issued the following statement on the municipal elections that took place in Saudi Arabia:

“Canada congratulates the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on its historic election of at least 20 female candidates in municipal elections held December 12.

“Following former King Abdullah’s decision in 2011 to allow women the right to vote and run in municipal elections, this election marks the first time in the history of the kingdom that women have been allowed to vote and to run for political office.

“Canada commends the men and women of Saudi Arabia for exercising their democratic right to vote and offers congratulations to the winning candidates, wishing them the best in their roles as municipal representatives.

“Canada looks forward to working with the Government of Saudi Arabia to uphold the principles of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms as enshrined in the charter of the United Nations.

“The participation of women and men in leadership and decision-making is essential to build and sustain prosperous, just and peaceful societies. This involves women’s rights to articulate their needs, views and interests, and to shape the decisions that affect their lives. Today marks an important step to continue the expansion of women’s participation in all areas of Saudi society.”
