  • New eight-speed automatic transmission

In a great ceremoony held by Abdul Latif Jameel Company Ltd, the exclusive dealer for Lexus in Saudi Arabia, announced the launch of all-new Lexus ES model 2019.

The ceremony was held in Riyadh, at  Lexus Center and attended by a group of Lexus loyal customers, as well as a number of  luxury cars lovers, the press and some prominent faces in social networking sites.

In this context, the chief engineer Yasuhiro Sakakibara, said:” Lexus has put a clear development target for the development of Lexus ES 2019, that is to upgrade it to all-new levels, which means the enhancement of a luxury sedan long famous for providing advanced levels of comfort and tranquility, offering interactive and more exciting driving experience that you can feel and hear it once sitting inside the car.”

Yasuhiro Sakakibara added:” With every new generation of the ES, the team works towards exceeding our customers’ needs and expectations. The all-new 2019 Lexus ES embodies our vision of developing a model that blends key elements of design and performance in a way that would deliver a higher level of enjoyment for its drivers and passengers. We knew this ES had to feel responsive and easy to drive, no matter what kind of road it was on. That can only be achieved with a solid foundation. We knew this ES had to feel responsive and easy to drive, no matter what kind of road it was on. That can only be achieved with a solid foundation.”.’ That meant further sharpening a sedan, known primarily for comfort and quietness, and adding class-leading handling and power that you can feel and hear. That foundation is the newly developed GA-K platform. It is an exceptionally rigid front-wheel-drive chassis made from several grades of high-strength steel. The GA-K platform also incorporates far more structural adhesives than the previous ES platform, as well as laser screw welding – a construction method shared with the LS sedan, which is used in 120 locations throughout the GA-K platform to further solidify the already robust structure. Additional measures were used to improve front-end stiffness, including a strut tower brace, multiple reinforcement panels for the strut towers themselves, and new radiator support braces.

Meanwhile, Yugo Miyamoto, Chief Representative, Middle East and North Africa Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation, said: “We are thrilled to announce the launch of the all-new Lexus ES in the Middle East in general and in Saudi Arabia in particular,  to complement the phenomenal success of the model and also to pave the way for a futuristic driving experience in the region. Building on the distinctive characteristics of the ES, such as the unparalleled ride comfort and quietness, refinement, and luxury appointments, the Lexus engineers challenged their craftsmanship to sculpt the exciting, all-new sedan.”

Miyamoto added: “Delivering on our promise to develop vehicles that offer amazing experiences and exceed the expectations of customers, we have introduced two new models in the ES lineup, including the ES 300h, an electrified hybrid model, and an F SPORT model. I would like to thank our customers in the region for inspiring us to push the boundaries of creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation.”

One of two major additions to the all-new Lexus ES lineup includes the ES 300h, an electrified hybrid model, which combines two power sources consisting of a petrol engine and two electric motors. The class-leading hybrid electric model enables customers to contribute to a sustainable future while enjoying increased driving satisfaction and engagement provided by its advanced technologies and cabin quietness, as well as its acceleration smoothness, especially when starting off.

The second addition is the all-new 2019 Lexus ES F SPORT model, which further enhances the driving excitement so that drivers can enjoy a sense of oneness with the car, born of its ability to respond immediately to driving enthusiasts’ intentions in various situations. In addition to a thrilling exterior that highlights its bold and aggressive personality, the all-new Lexus ES F SPORT features numerous upgrades such as a retuned suspension, 19-inch wheels and tires, and unique aluminum interior trim that gives the machine a more dynamic look and feel.

The introduction of the all-new 2019 Lexus ES continues the expression of the brand’s design direction and commitment towards crafting vehicles with heightened excitement, emotion, and passion, expanding that vision of the brand’s future to a broader audience.

The provocative elegance of the design starts up front with the latest iteration of the brand’s signature grille but adds individual cues that are unique to the ES such as the vertical grille pattern and satin-plated trim, adding slim headlamps with distinctive L-shaped marker lights. In profile, the ES has a dynamic yet fluid shape that starts with the low hood line that feeds into the sleek roofline. The rear of the all-new Lexus ES is clean and sharply chiseled, with distinctive three-dimensional, L-shaped LED taillamps that wrap around the quarter panels to provide a continuous styling line from any angle.

Complementing the all-new Lexus ES emotional design is a thrilling drive personality imbued by three powertrain options. The ES 350 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that is designed to deliver commanding acceleration along with an invigorating sound. With an update to the D4-S fuel injection system, the impressively smooth engine now produces 300 hp and maximum torque of 356 nm/4700 rpm.

While the ES 250 is powered by an all-new, high-efficiency 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 204 hp and a maximum torque of 243 nm/5000 rpm. This aluminum-intensive engine features a long-stroke design, laser-clad intake valve seats and advanced Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to achieve a new high-speed combustion process.

The two powertrains on ES 350 and ES 250 are mated to a new eight-speed direct-shift automatic transmission. This uses an ultra-thin torque converter and a multi-plate lock-up clutch to more efficiently transfer power to the front wheels, and has been tuned to deliver crisp, precisely-timed shifts with quick pedal responses.

In addition, an electrified hybrid powertrain was developed for the all-new ES. This third powertrain option combines two power sources consisting of a petrol engine producing 176 hp and a maximum torque of 221 nm/5300 rpm, and two electric motors produce 118 hp, delivering a combined system output of 214 hp. This powertrain is also mated to a new hybrid transaxle that provides the lowest fuel consumption value of 24.4km/L, and highest driving performance of this class. The hybrid transaxle offers differential limit torque under certain conditions such as light loads or low rotational speed differences, to help realize excellent straight-line stability against external disturbances as well as steering stability.

The class-leading hybrid electric model ES 300h can be driven entirely by either electrical ‎power with zero-fuel consumption and carbon emissions, or with a combination of a petrol ‎engine and two electric motors, depending on the vehicle’s speed and customer’s driving behavior. ‎The batteries in the hybrid electric drivetrain are automatically charged by either the petrol ‎engine or when braking and decelerating, eliminating the need to plug in a power cord. Furthermore, the ES 300h electrified ‎hybrid model features a host of advanced technologies, yet drives like any other conventional car and ‎does not require special fuel, while driving and taking care of the car is no different from any other car.

Completing the all-new Lexus ES’ distinct personality is its exquisite interior that invites the driver and passengers to enjoy a range of advanced features offering a refined cabin experience. These include an enhanced in-vehicle 12.3-inch multimedia display, a 10.2-inch colored and adjustable head-up display (HUD), a 7-inch color multi-information display (MID), a wireless charging system for smartphones, an LED ambient illumination, the Lexus Climate Concierge with a 3-zone independent temperature control system, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, multi-adjustable power and ventilated front seats, power reclining rear seats, a rear armrest with multi-operation panel, and a hands-free power trunk lid.

Highlighting Lexus’ unrelenting focus on safety, the all-new vehicle ensures complete peace of mind with Lexus Safety System+, an advanced safety technology package that includes Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pedestrian detection during daylight and certain low-light condition, all-speed range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with a new feature called Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), and two-stage adaptive high beam system (AHS). In addition, the car features a comprehensive array of safety features to protect its occupants, such as 10 SRS airbags, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Parking Support Alert (PKSA), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Active Cornering Assist (ACA), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), among many others.

The all-new Lexus ES is available in a wide range of exterior colors that satisfy all tastes with two mutually exclusive colors for the sports model F SPORT, thereby allowing customers to express their individuality and personality. On the other hand, there are also various options of Interior colors with two new colors, the Rich Cream and Chateau, plus another color exclusively for F SPORT. Various options of wood interior decorations are available per the segment, with three new designs, which are Bamboo, Shimamoku Black and  3D Film 3D, with exclusive design for F SPORT. The car has three new wheel designs size 17 inch, 18 inch and the exclusive 19 inch for F SPORT.

Sony Corporation announces record Q1 FY2018 profit Focus on stable sources of revenue contribute to steady increase in sales

Sony Corporation reported a record first-quarter operating income ending 30 June 2018 with a 24 per cent year-on-year increase to US$1.78 billion (¥195 billion) as compared to US$1.42 billion (¥157.6 billion) in the previous year.

The consolidated Sales & Operating revenue also increased by five per cent to US$17.90 billion (¥1.95 trillion) compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. The net income attributable to Sony Corporation’s stockholders for the quarter was 2.8 times higher than the previous quarter posting US$2.08 billion (¥226.4 billion).

This growth was spurred by strong sales of gaming software which bumped up the forecasts for gaming and chips. The semiconductor division, which includes imaging sensors, posted an operating income of US$266 million (¥29.1 billion), reinforcing sensors as a pillar of growth in the medium and long term, as applications are likely to expand to depth sensing, surveillance, factory automation and automobiles.

Meanwhile, sales of the Home Entertainment & Sound (HE&S) division increased six per cent year-on-year to US$2.49 billion (¥272.1 billion), brought on by an increase in unit sales of televisions, audio products and headphones.

The Imaging Products & Solutions segment also recorded a six per cent rise year-on-year to US$1.5 billion (¥164.2 billion), while the operating income increased to US$239 million (¥26.1 billion). The rise in sales and operating income was due to improvement in the product mix of still and video cameras reflecting a shift to high value-added products particularly in the interchangeable lens, mirrorless cameras and lenses segments.

“The first quarter of our fiscal year was promising as we aligned the forecast in the Middle East and Africa region with the new management’s strategy of focusing on stable sources of revenue.  We are reinforcing our sales strategy by promoting our focus product categories from the much-awaited BRAVIA MASTER Series of 4K HDR TVs, our industry leading wireless noise cancelling 1000X series headphones, and the highly acclaimed Alpha series of full frame mirrorless cameras,” said Fumiatsu Hirai, Managing Director, Sony Middle East and Africa.

The consolidated sales forecast for the upcoming quarter is US$78.82 billion (¥8.600 trillion) as a result of upward revisions, primarily in the Game & Network Services segment.

  • World’s Fastest 0.03 seconds AF speed combined with 315 focal-plane phase-detection AF points covering approximately 65% of frame

Sony has expanded its popular Cyber-shot RX100 series of premium compact cameras with the launch of the RX100 VI (model DSC-RX100M6) in the UAE, bringing unmatched clarity and precision to images shot indoors and outdoors. Sony, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, also announced the VCT-SGR1, a versatile and compact new Shooting Grip best suited for its RX0 and RX100 series of cameras.

The RX100 VI is the first of all the RX100 models to include a high magnification zoom lens, as it packs in an impressive ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mmi F2.8 – F4.5 lens. Priced at SAR4,899, the innovative new RX100 VI camera will be available at Modern Electronics stores in the Kingdom on 5th August.

This latest premium compact camera combines portability, flexibility, fast responsiveness and professional image quality making it an ideal choice for capturing daily life, cityscapes, portraiture, sports including wildlife.

Inside the camera is a one-inch stacked 20.1 MP Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor with DRAM chip and an upgraded BIONZ X™ image processor with a front-end LSI that maximises processing speed and optimises image quality in all shooting environments.

Additionally, the RX100 VI features an efficient Fast Hybrid AF system with 315-point phase-detection AF points on the sensor that can acquire focus in as little as 0.03 secondsiii, the world’s fastest AF acquisition time for 1.0-type sensor cameras.  It can also shoot at up to 24 fps at full resolution with continuous AF/AE tracking and produces beautiful 4Kvii video with full pixel readout and no pixel binning.

Shuichi Mugitani, Head of Marketing, Sony Middle East and Africa said: “The strength of Sony is that we develop all key camera components such as advanced image sensors, image processors, lenses and software algorithms in-house. The new RX100 VI is the latest in the premium compact RX series, with advanced capabilities that combine extensive zoom, professional image quality and the versatility for still image and video. The sleek design and long zoom lens make it particularly useful for travel and lifestyle photography enthusiasts. Given the growing number of travel and lifestyle bloggers in the UAE, we believe this product will be a valuable addition to the premium compact camera segment, setting a new benchmark in performance, functionality and design.”

New High-Magnification ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm i Zoom Lens plus Outstanding Image Quality

The RX100 VI’s high powered zoom lens of both 24-70mm and 70-200mmi focal lengths is achieved thanks to its unique design featuring two ED (extra-low dispersion) aspherical glass elements and eight aspherical lens elements including four AA (advanced aspherical) lenses.

It also delivers outstanding sharpness at all focal lengths as well as maintains a large aperture throughout the entire zoom range, ensuring portraits can be created with beautiful background defocus, and fast moving subjects can be captured with crisp focus and no blurring. Additionally, the lens has built-in Optical SteadyShotTM image stabilisation that is equivalent to a 4.0-stop faster shutter speed, helping to prevent camera shake or blurry images even in a low-light condition or at telephoto zoom range.

Lightning-Fast AF Performance and Shooting Speeds

The new RX100 VI model features a Fast Hybrid AF system that ultimately allows the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.03 secondsiii.  This innovative AF system combines the respective advantages of 315-point focal-plane phase-detection AF points that cover approximately 65 per cent of the sensor and contrast-detection AF.  This high speed focusing complements the versatile 24-200mmi range of the lens, ensuring all subjects can be captured with precise detail and clarity.

The RX100 VI is the first from the series to include Sony’s advanced High-density Tracking AF technology, which concentrates AF points around a subject to improve tracking and focus accuracy.  The popular Eye AF technology is also available with approximately 2x the tracking performance of the current RX100 series model.  Further, the camera has LCD touch focusing and touchpad focus point control for users that would like to drag their fingers to ideal focus points of their choice.

An ideal complement to the AF system, the RX100 VI offers continuous high-speed shooting at up to 24 fpsv with full AF/AE tracking, with an impressive buffer limit of up to 233 images.  The display lag of the EVF has been substantially reduced compared to prior models, allowing shooters to capture the decisive moment with ultimate confidence.  Also, for convenience during image playback, continuously shot images can be displayed in groups instead of individual shots.

The RX100 VI also has a high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32000 second) that reduces the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects, and can shoot completely silently in all modes, including continuous high speed shooting, when electronic shutter is engaged.  A mechanical shutter mode is also available as well if required by the user.

Advanced Movie Capabilities Including 4K HDR

The pocket-friendly RX100 VI is packed with a variety of video capabilities that will satisfy even the most demanding video enthusiasts. With Fast Hybrid AF, the focal-plane phase-detection AF points ensures accurate focusing and tracking performance, even for the severe focusing requirements of 4Kvii movie shooting.  AF drive speed and AF tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted via the menu system, giving shooters plenty of flexibility based on their focusing preferences.

In 4Kvii mode, the new RX100 VI utilises full pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that all the finer details of 4K video are captured with minimal moire and ‘jaggies’.

For the first time in a Cyber-shot camera, the RX100 VI features 4K HDR compatibility thanks to its new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile that offers an instant HDR workflow solution.  Additional professional calibre video features include S-Log3/S-Gamut3, 120p Full HD mode, Picture Profile, proxy recording and more.  The RX100 VI is able to record super slow motion video at either 240fps, 480 fps or 960 fps.

Premium Design, Control and Convenience

The new RX100 VI is equipped with a high-contrast 2.35 million dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ with ZEISS® T* Coating, ensuring true-to-life image preview and playback functionality.  The EVF itself retracts in and out of the camera body based on user preference, and can be activated instantly by a single One-push Access button.

The RX100 VI has a touch shutter that can be activated by tapping the back LCD screen, a zoom lever with customizable zoom speeds and an LCD that can be rotated 180 degrees upward or 90 degrees downward for a variety of shooting angles for the creator.  There is also a Monitor Auto OFF function that boosts max number of still images by up to 30 per cent, and the camera is also Wi-Fi®, NFC™ and Bluetooth® compatible.

Complementing the rest of the RX family

The new RX100 VI is also a perfect companion for RX0, the all new type of camera that is ultra-compact, shockproof and waterproof. The RX0 is equally adept at shooting still images, filming video or can be used as part of a multi-camera set-up to create an inspiring series of images, videos and super slow-motion footage from a multitude of different perspectives.

Current selling and very popular model from RX100 series, the RX100 V is the camera of choice for food photographers. Its 20.1 MP Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor coupled with the large aperture Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 24-70mm F1.8/2.8-F8 lens produces stunning images with crisp contrast. Similar to RX100 VI this camera too is equipped with a Fast Hybrid AF system with an AF acquisition at 0.05 seconds and world’s highest number of AF points on sensor with 315 points covering approximately 65% of the frame.  This camera can also shoot continuously at speeds of up to 24 fps – the world’s fastest for a compact camera.

Meanwhile, known for its relatively fast zoom lens, the RX100 IV has a memory-attached 1.0-type stacked CMOS sensor and contrast detection AF system that allows locking in focus for 0.05 seconds. It is also packed with a Bionz X image processor and 4K video recording and slow-motion video at up to 960fps.

The RX100 III camera features a Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 aperture lens for both wide panorama and perfect close-up shots. It also has a versatile, high-quality OLED Tru-Finder™ electronic viewfinder with an impressive 1.4 million dot resolution, adding exceptional brightness and clarity to still images shot in low light conditions.

New VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip for RX0 and RX100 Series Cameras

Ideal for vlogging, travel photography, self-portraits and much more, the new VCT-SGR1 is a vertically-oriented shooting grip that attaches to Sony’s RX0 and RX100 series of cameras1 via Multi/Micro USB Terminal.  It is extremely compact and lightweight, and can adjust angles up 70 degrees or down to 100 degrees to capture different perspectives including high-angle shots, low-angle shots and self-portraits. The grip features several buttons at the top of the grip including shutter release, REC stop/start and zoom functionality, allowing for easy fingertip control for both right and left handed usage.  Additionally, the bottom of the grip can be spread-out and used as a tripod, making it an ideal accessory for group photos or low-light shooting conditions to avoid camera shake when shooting at slower shutter speeds.

  • Smarter mobility for passengers

Getting real time information to plan your journey

Optimet OrbanMap, an intelligent metro map

To make transport in the metro faster, more comfortable, and more pleasant, Alstom launches Optimet OrbanMap, a real-time dynamic information for metro networks. Designed for a collective use, and located in the station, Optimet OrbanMap allows visualising at a glance the metro network, its activity, trains position, travel times, service interruptions, and the level of comfort aboard the trains.  Optimet OrbanMap also offers a dynamic vision of the city. It indicates places of special interest such as restaurants, museums, sports, etc.

Optimet OrbanMap obtains traffic information from the automatic train supervision system associated to the subway line. City life information is obtained from social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Foursquare, fed by residents and visitors. Data is analysed and selected by a moderator.

Decide your position on the platform

Optimet real-time train occupancy

On the metro platform, passengers are often spread out unequally and often concentrate at each end of it not knowing where to stand to board the metro efficiently. In peak times, this often generates congestion around the doors and makes passengers exchange difficult. To address this issue, Alstom launches Optimet real-time train occupancy, a solution that shows the level of occupancy per car through a colour LED strip (red, orange or green) above the screen doors which stretches all along the platform, as well as on monitors in the station passage ways and/or elevators.

Optimet real-time train occupancy combines a counting system and an information display system. The counting system uses sensors mounted on the platform screen doors. It interfaces with Optimet sensors and rolling stock load indications to determine the load of each vehicle. The data collected by the sensors is processed by an algorithm to recalculate the metro occupancy levels. The algorithm also takes into account the specific characteristics of the train (dimensions, seating arrangement, etc.), in order to provide the most accurate information. Once the doors close, this data is processed, interpreted and sent to the next station to be displayed. Thus, before the train arrives, commuters know where to stand on the platform in order to board the train in areas less crowded.

Having solutions for the first and last mile

EZ10

As passengers are requiring more and more flexibility and seamless transport from door to door, Alstom has invested
€14 million in EasyMile, an innovative start-up company which manufactures an electric autonomous shuttle called ‘EZ10’ that guarantees the first and last mile transportation. This enables Alstom to expand its knowledge into the driverless technologies, to reinforce its portfolio and enlarge its range of solutions.

EZ10 by EasyMile is defined as an electric collective shuttle that can accommodate up to 12 passengers. The vehicle is designed to be integrated in an Automated Road Transport Systems (ARTS), dedicated to the public transportation application, in private areas or cities. EZ10 is designed to operate in both directions in a similar manner, without having to do a U-turn. To this aim, the front and rear light are identical. Depending on the direction where the vehicle is driving, the lights will automatically be re-configured to stay consistent with the vehicle’s movement.

Since April 2015, EZ10 has been deployed in more than 50 sites in 14 countries in Asia, North-America, Middle-East and Europe. In France, it is now being tested in Paris since September 2016.

New experiences of mobility

Aptis

Alstom together with its subsidiary NTL, has launched a new experience of mobility to complete its emission-free, 100% electric range of solutions: Aptis.

Aptis‘ design is inspired by the one of a tram. It incorporates low-floor accessibility and 360° views. With batteries and power systems located on the top and the wheels situated at both ends with no overhangs, Aptis offers passengers a never-seen before full low floor. Aptis can carry up to 95 passengers on board. It features two or three large double doors which enable easy on-and-off passenger flows and smooth access for wheelchairs and strollers.

Combined with panoramic windows at both ends, Aptis offer 20% more windows surface for the comfort of the passengers. Moreover, it has low noise levels.

With four steerable wheels versus two for a bus, Aptis occupies 25% less surface area in curves, providing perfect integration into the city. At bus stops, this minimises the space needed to park while offering gains in available space for other vehicles.

Aptis can be charged in two different ways. The first mode involves bringing enough energy on board to have sufficient autonomy for a full day of operation, then recharging the batteries in the depot overnight using a standard plug (it takes around 6 hours to fully recharge the batteries). The other solution may be either Alstom’s SRS solution or an inverted pantograph, which takes around 5 minutes to recharge, equivalent to a quick drivers’ break.

Stay connected all through the journey

Nomad Digital solutions

With a large range of smart devises (laptops, tablets, smartphones, smart watches, etc.) and continuous evolution of the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), connectivity while traveling is a must for passengers. In is strategy to enhance passenger experience and accelerate digitalisation of its offering, Alstom acquired Nomad Digital, a world leading provider of passenger and fleet connectivity solutions for the railway industry.

Nomad offer includes Wi-Fi connection solutions as well as entertainment platforms (video, music, and playback) or connected on-board service, for example, ordering its coffee from its seat.

In addition, Nomad Digital also provides tele maintenance solutions, including Remote Online Condition Monitoring, Reliability Centred Maintenance, Driver Assist and Power Train products.

  • Smart mobility for operators

Better manage multimodal operations

Mastria

Alstom launches Mastria, a multimodal supervision solution, which, through planned predictive and automated data analysis is able to generate quick and reliable reports, allowing operators to rapidly offer alternative mobility solutions to commuters.

Mastria combines Alstom’s 30-years of experience in the implementation of traffic management systems for urban and mainline customers worldwide with the results of the SystemX technological research institute.

Mastria optimises traffic fluidity for all means of transportation (buses, trams, metros, taxis…). The information on the best routes at any given time is available for transport authorities to dispatch to passengers. This optimises the duration of the trip thanks to an orchestration of the modes and flows in the transport system. In case of technical failures, other incidents or special events such as sports matches, bad weather, and public demonstrations, Mastria is able to anticipate the impact that the incident will have on the network and ensures that various operators collaborate in order to adapt the transport service accordingly and to offer alternative itineraries for passengers to reach their final destinations.

Mastria’s benefits go beyond the optimisation of the traffic and minimisation of commuting time. It also enables an increase in transport capacity and reduces the energy needed to operate the mobility system.

Mastria is based on four main standard functions which are: multimodal supervision, traffic management, operations orchestration and predictive analytics. These functions are highly configurable and can be combined together according to operators’ needs and to the transport network environment. It communicates over secure network connections with external control and information systems.  It is flexible and designed to be scalable as to adapt to different transport networks, from local transport nodes to larger ones.  It can be expanded to accommodate the inclusion of new lines and additional transportation means.

More punctuality and flexibility through autonomous solutions

Driving assistance

Driving assistance increases capacity and quality of the service, ensuring punctuality, accurate stops and energy saved through a smoother drive. For metro, Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is the state of the art technology. Alstom has equipped more than 50 lines with ATO in cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai (China), Lausanne (Switzerland), or Panama, and is equipping 40 others making the group a leader. Alstom is also investing in equipping mainline trains with driving assistance.

Autonomous trains

Alstom is the world leader in driverless metro  and the company has implemented some of the first driverless metros in the world (Lille Metro in the 80’s and first driverless heavy metro in Singapore).

Driverless rolling stock ensures flexible operation and reduces cost related to operations. Alstom is now investing in new autonomous drive systems to enhance its portfolio of services as illustrated by the recent investment in EasyMile and the tests realised on a tram in a RATP depot in the suburb of Paris (Vitry-Sur-Seine). Equipped with virtual manipulator, localisation, anti-collision Lidar, and sensors, the tram is for the first time in the world able to park in the depot in full autonomy.

Predictive maintenance through advanced data science

HealthHub

Alstom has launched HealthHub a couple of years ago, a solution that collects data from rolling stock, infrastructure and signalling systems and allows predictive maintenance across all assets. The solution enables to shift from traditional mileage-based maintenance towards condition-based and predictive maintenance. To achieve this, the algorithms developed combine advanced data analysis with the technical system experience from design and operation.

The solution provides dashboards and reports that turn data into valuable information for maintenance and operation activities. It can be cloud-based, or provided as part of the on-premises architecture according to specific customer constraints. Combined with new maintenance strategies, e.g. using dynamic maintenance plans, this approach optimises availability, reliability and cost.

Remote condition monitoring started in 2006 with TrainTracer, enabling smarter data-driven decisions. It has been deployed as of 2014 for mainline operations such as for Virgin high speed Pendolino trains in the UK, NTV AGV high speed trains in Italy or PKP high speed Pendolino trains in Poland, to name a few examples. More recently, Alstom’s HealthHub solution is also deployed in urban transport such as the tramway systems in Reims and Nice.

Film Celebrates Life in the UAE 50 Years Ago with Land Rover

  • “A Journey of Rediscovery,” documents the lives of two men who relied on Land Rovers in the late 1960’s
  • Watch the story of Robin Webb and Majed Awwad here: https://youtu.be/Rl0h8wZIVuM

#MYLAND

The Trucial States, the land we now call the United Arab Emirates, was a barren environment in the early 1960’s and with no roads to connect the surrounding Emirates, 4x4s were the only way to get around. To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Land Rover, an extraordinary film has been released, which documents the lives of two people who depended on Land Rovers on a daily basis.

With no roads, traveling between the Emirates was rough and dangerous and so for Dubai based civil engineer Robin Webb and Ras Al-Khaimah resident, Majed Awwad, the only option was a Land Rover.

Director Hind Shoufani, working with Mr. Webb’s nephew, Iain Akerman, has directed and produced “A Journey of Rediscovery,” which tells Robin’s and Majed’s stories and their relationship with their Land Rovers. The film not only documents the days before the formation of the United Arab Emirates, but also pays tribute to seven decades of Land Rover by demonstrating how the trusted 4×4 played a role in their journey.

Majed Mohammed Awwad came to Ras Al-Khaimah through Egypt as a young Palestinian, in the 1960s to work as an advisor, before working in the local municipality.

“Whoever owned a Land Rover back then was considered very important. It was the only car capable of overcoming all challenges” Mr. Awwad said.

Mr. Webb designed and supervised the construction of some of the first roads in the Emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah as one of his final projects before leaving the Middle East in 1968.

“One of the great things about us doing engineering was that we had Land Rovers. We basically lived in Land Rovers the whole time. They were the most trusted off-road companions and the best way to connect people and states when few roads existed.” Mr. Webb said.

Mr. Webb’s work in Dubai included constructing the souq wharf, extending the customs wharf and dredging Dubai Creek, while he was also called to work on jobs in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al-Khaimah.

To get to the other Emirates from Dubai, he had to drive his Land Rover across the enormous sabkha flats at low tide, over sand dunes, along the hard-packed wet sand of the beaches and through the gravel plains.

“It’s almost unfathomable now to think how harsh the environment was in the United Arab Emirates not that long ago. Back then, having a Land Rover was literally a life saver in order to guarantee that you would safely get back home before nightfall,” said Salman Sultan, Public Relations and Social Media Manager for Jaguar Land Rover MENA.

The film was shot entirely in the UAE and shows that although everything changes with time, memories remain to light the path forward. “A Journey of Rediscovery,” brilliantly illustrates how Land Rover has been a part of Majed and Robin’s UAE excursions half a century ago and is another story in Jaguar Land Rover MENA’s #MYLAND initiative, (Ardhi in Arabic), which celebrates the impact of Arab culture on today’s modern world.

It shows the strong bond that exists between people and their 4x4s and confirms the key role Land Rover has played in developing the United Arab Emirates and the pride that Land Rover has with the region.
