Key Bankers and Financial Institutions set for Euromoney Saudi Arabia 2014 Panels to Examine Capital Markets in the Kingdom; New Sources for Infrastructure Investment and Solutions to Saudi Arabia’s Housing Challenges

Senior banking leaders and representatives of major financial institutions are set to participate in the 9th Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference, which will take place in Riyadh on 6 and 7 May 2014.

The conference, which was named as the “best national and regional conference on the Saudi economy” by the Council of Ministers, will be co-hosted with the Saudi Ministry of Finance. It is attracting some of the most important people in finance to the Kingdom, to take part in a far-reaching discussion of crucial issues facing the country and the global economy today.

A major session on capital markets will look at the development of Saudi Arabia’s stock exchange, and examine the careful steps being taken to allow greater foreign direct investment and enhance the regulatory framework.

The Saudi bourse, the Tadawul, has a market capitalisation of US$417 billion, and sees around US$1.3 billion traded every day, making it the region’s most liquid market by a significant margin. However, the authorities recognise the need to open the market beyond the current base of retail investors in the Kingdom. International banks including HSBC Holdings have suggested that Saudi Arabia’s market may open to foreigners as early as this year.

Adel Al-Ghamdi, Chief Executive Officer of Tadawul; Salah Garawi, Head of Corporate Finance at Saudi Aramco; Yasser Al-Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Manafea Holding Company; and Nina Lagron, Senior Fund Manager at Amundi Asset Management will take part in a keynote discussion chaired by Euromoney to examine the changes affecting the Tadawul and the road ahead for the Arab World’s largest stock market.

Infrastructure investment is another area of the Saudi economy seeing significant development. Due to the rising population and on-going economic growth, the Kingdom is looking to raise significant funds to support transport, water, power and housing projects, looking to a mix of public and private investment.

Euromoney is gathering the key players involved in these projects to discuss the investment opportunities and the potential challenges that lie ahead. The panel on infrastructure will include representatives from NCB, the Bechtel Group, ACWA Power and Saudi Kuwait Finance House, bringing a range of perspectives to the debate.

Euromoney Conferences’ Regional Director, Richard Banks, said: “Each of our panels will feature national and international financial leaders who are playing an active role in shaping the future of the Saudi Arabian economy. With senior government representatives, private sector chief financial officers and major bankers, The Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference is set to be a crucial event for financiers and investors working in and with the Kingdom.”

Representing the government at the event will be H.E. Dr Ibrahim Al-Assaf, Minister of Finance; H.E. Dr Muhammad Al-Jasser, Minister of Economy and Planning; H.E. Dr Shwaish Al-Dowaihy, Minister of Housing; H.E. Mr Adel Fakeih, Minister of Labour; and H.E. Mr Majid Al-Moneef, Secretary General of Saudi Supreme Economic Council.

Other major executives taking part include Charles Dallara, Executive Vice Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Americas of Partners Group (USA); Ambroise Fayolle, Chief Executive Officer of Agence France Trésor and representatives of some of the Kingdom’s key enterprises, including senior officials from the Public Pension Agency, NCB, Etihad Etisalat Mobily, SABIC, Al Rajhi Capital, and Jadwa Investment.

Major global institutions represented at the event will include HSBC, BNP Paribas, and The World Bank.

The Euromoney Saudi Arabia Conference is the longest-running, largest and most influential financial conference in the Kingdom.  It will take place at the Al Faisaliah Hotel in Riyadh on 6 and 7 May 2014 and is expected to attract around 1,200 delegates from all over the region and the world. For more information on the Conference, visit www.euromoneyconference.com/saudi.html.

The Summit, held at the Four Seasons Hotel brought together an audience of senior security professionals from the IT industry, including Chief Security Officers, Compliance and Risk Managers, CIOs, and IT Directors to highlightthe emerging trends in the space of cyber security and shed light on how organizations can help build an element of ‘trust’ in their IT organizations and the need to ramp up theirteam’s ability to face the unknown threats and ensure data protection and mitigation of the risk of an attack.

The adoption of third platform technologies such as cloud computing, Big Data, social networking and mobile devices to help enterprises achieve their IT and business transformation goals depends on entirely on a foundation of trust and the organization’s ability to secure their cloud environment ensuring that data is protected no matter where, how and what device it may be accessed from.  The rapid evolution of the IT industry in turn introduces organizations to a whole new host of advancedrisks and persistent threats that are far more complex, destructive and frequent in volume than ever known.

The subject follows from a recent survey[1] conducted by EMC found that 73% of respondents in Saudi Arabia agree that Big Data technology will prove vital in identifying and protecting against cyber-attacks while only 72% of respondents were confident of their ability to fully recover all their data should they have need to.

Bayer HealthCare supports educational program on diabetes in Saudi Arabia “Excellence across Borders” project sets out to raise awareness in schools

Under its “Excellence across Borders” program Bayer HealthCare supports local projects in order to improve care of people with diabetes. With this program, Bayer HealthCare actively promotes a country-specific approach in countries of the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region with still low awareness in broader part of the population by sharing knowledge and experience in excellence-oriented networks. Among the projects is a new Diabetic School Awareness Program aimed at teenagers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which has now been started. The program intends to enhance diabetes awareness and management to reduce the number of people at risk and is supported by the Association of Diabetic Patient Friends in Jeddah and Bayer HealthCare’s “Excellence across Borders” initiative. It presents a local approach to improve knowledge about current options in the diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of diabetes in this region.

“Improving the conditions for people living with diabetes will undoubtedly be one of the most challenging health issues of the 21st century,” said Gerd-Walter Rohm, initiator of the initiative “Excellence across Borders” at Bayer HealthCare. “Raising awareness among the younger population and sharing best practice is an important priority to drive progress on diabetes management.”

Saudi Arabia has the second highest comparative prevalence of diabetes in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region. The country’s rapid urbanization has influenced the lifestyle and nutrition of its people over the past three decades, leading to epidemic proportions of about 23 percent of the adults affected by diabetes mellitus.

“The ‘Excellence across Borders’ program fosters regional cooperation on all levels of diabetes management, helping us to further meet our patients’ needs”, explained Professor Hassan Hussein Fatani, Consultant Endocrinologist at King Abdulaziz University (KAAU) Jeddah and Erfan Hospital and President of the Association of Diabetic Patient Friends, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. “Our project evaluates the level of diabetic problems among young people in Saudi Arabia. With the results, we can recommend ways for changing youth lifestyles and reduce the number of people at risk.”

Located in the Jeddah region, the Diabetic School Awareness Program aims at addressing the younger population that constitutes about 70 percent of the total population. Healthcare professionals will visit local schools to assess current prevalence rates of type 1 and 2 diabetes, and to assess information on obesity and glucose intolerance among teenagers twelve to 18 years old. All classes and students within the school will be targeted for the awareness program via various educational activities. The fieldwork will screen students at ten to 14 schools representing different socio-economic backgrounds. As a first step, questionnaires will be conducted through all classes. Additionally, 20 to 30 percent of the student body will be encouraged to have a random capillary blood sugar test. If the results are over 130mg/dl, the respective students will be encouraged to receive further testing for an accurate diagnosis. Students will be educated by science teachers and health workers in improving personal lifestyles through lectures, audio-visual aids and educational activities.

Developments from all over the world show the urgent need for initiatives such as the Diabetic School Awareness Program. New estimates recently published by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) show that 371 million people worldwide are suffering from the metabolic disorder and another 187 million are still to be diagnosed. In a global context, four out of five patients are living in low and middle income countries where diabetes has turned into a major economic and political burden.[1] With “Excellence across Borders”, Bayer HealthCare actively supports a country-specific approach in countries with insufficient awareness in a broader part of the population and diabetes management standards by sharing knowledge and experience in excellence-oriented networks. Participants may learn from one another and become inspired and motivated to search for new local options in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diabetes in their home countries.

MICROSOFT TO END SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS XP ON 8 APRIL 2014 Figures for February2014 show Windows XP accounts for only 7.9% of PCs in Saudi Arabia.

Microsoft has announced that it will officially retire service and support for Windows XP on 8 April 2014.

After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates and non-security related fixes for the 12-year-old operating system. Additionally, phone and online support for technical assistance or content updates will terminate. Users will no longer receive the updates that help protect PCs from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software, which may result in downtime and software compatibility issues.

Loai Bafaqeeh, Public Sector Lead, Microsoft Arabia, stated: “Market analysis conducted in February 2014 shows that only 7.9% of PCs in Saudi Arabia are running Windows XP, a 12-year-old operating system no longer capable of handling sophisticated cyber-attacks and meeting demands for more data privacy and productivity.”

“That’s equivalent to an alarming figure of 624,000 PCs. We have seen a strong shift since September 2013, with consumers and businesses steadily upgrading to Windows 7 or 8.”

According to the findings of Microsoft’s Security Intelligence Report, Volume 14, released in April 2013, Windows XP is up to 56.5 times more vulnerable than Windows 8, while a new Cybersecurity report from Microsoft shows Windows XP’s actual infection rate is 6 times higher than Windows 8.

Commenting on the security issues, Tim Rains, Director at Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing (TwC) group, said: “Running Windows XP in your environment after the end of the support date may expose your company to an even higher rate of potential risks. Networks that include Windows XP computers used for normal office activities, such as e-mail, web browsing, word processing, etc., will become undefendable and will invite attackers inside.”

“Therefore, Microsoft is urging all business and consumers still using PCs running on Windows XP to upgrade to either Windows 7 or Windows 8, an option which has upside well beyond keeping you supported. It offers more flexibility to empower employees to be more productive, while increasing operational efficiency through improved PC security and management. It also enables your organization to take advantage of latest technology trends such as virtualization and the cloud.”

Microsoft built Windows for a mobile generation bringing together the best of software, services and devices. Today, the next generation of mobile computing starts with the new Windows platform, the one operating system that covers the broad spectrum of modern business needs.

Eugene Kaspersky to meet government and financial sector representatives in Saudi Arabia

On March 3 and 4, 2014 Eugene Kaspersky, Chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Lab, will be in Riyadh to meet with key government officials and financial sector leaders to discuss current cyberthreats and ways of combatting them. Following a number of top level meetings of his and of other Kaspersky Lab senior managers in November 2013 in Saudi Arabia, this visit is testament to the company’s commitment to help the Saudi government achieve its objective of creating a safer digital environment for both enterprises and individuals across the nation.

Ahead of his Riyadh trip, Eugene commented: “Saudi Arabia plays an extremely important role in the world, and therefore the state of cybersecurity in the country is a matter of global importance. It is a rapidly growing economy facing very significant risks in cyberspace. The sophistication of malware continues to grow alongside the danger it poses, and governments, private companies and international organizations should work hand in hand to keep the Internet safe and secure.”

On March 4 Eugene Kaspersky will share his expert take on the state of modern-day cybercrime and what needs to be done to tackle it. The presentation will take place at the Information Security Workshop for the Financial Sector organized by SAMA, the “Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency”. Kaspersky Lab’s participation in the event comes right after the global announcement of the new Kaspersky Fraud Prevention platform, which is aimed at helping financial organizations and companies in the e-commerce sector protect electronic payments on computers and mobile devices.

Both organizations and ordinary users across Saudi Arabia continue to face cyberthreats as a result of increasing Internet and mobile penetration. Findings of the Global Corporate IT Security Risks 2013 survey, conducted by B2B International in collaboration with Kaspersky Lab, show 98% of companies in Saudi Arabia reporting at least one external IT security incident in 12 months. At the same time a great many people make use of online banking services or make online purchases; the widespread penetration of e-payments has made the theft of electronic money a profitable business for criminals. The study found that in the preceding 12-month period 62% of users around the world had encountered cyberthreats that targeted their accounts.

The YouTube Roadshow will demonstrate the key benefits of YouTube Partnership Program which was launched in MENA and KSA in 2013. The program allows anyone with a YouTube channel to monetize their content and make revenue by displaying ads against their original content. The program was originally launched in March 2013 to users in Egypt, KSA, UAE and later expanded in September 2013 to include Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman

“This is our first YouTube Roadshow event in KSA which is home to a lot of great content that’s being produced. Compelling content can come from anywhere we’re giving people the platform, the tools, and the support to make great things happen and grow big audiences.” stated Marenco Kemp, YouTube Online Partnerships in EMEA. Mr. Nawaf Al Sahhaf, CEO at Badir Program for Technology Incubators, confirmed the importance of this event as it provides the opportunity for Saudi entrepreneurs to hone their skills and capabilities through information and knowledge exchange regarding the best ways to utilize the most famous videosharing website worldwide. keen in organizing and sponsoring unique and enriching events to provide an encouraging environment that would induce innovation and support technology entrepreneurship while promoting a culture of selfemployment and preparing extraordinary entrepreneurs for the Kingdom.

YouTube has become a cultural phenomenon in many countries around the world and its effects are arguably most noticeable in KSA where 83% of users access the platform on a daily basis. The majority of users in KSA view YouTube as both the number one destination for online videos and the main platform for high quality content with 73% and 58% respectively. YouTube has also

become a major hub for brands in KSA, which is especially evident in the fact that YouTube users in Saudi Arabia are opinion leaders. Those users are 2.5X more likely to give ratings for services, 2X more likely to share their opinion about things they like and are 2.2X more likely to be approached for advice by acquaintances before a purchase is made which makes YouTube of major interest to brands and advertisers alike.
