Regional lighting market continues to shine as leading global player’s line up for Light Middle East 2017 GCC LED lighting market to grow by 16%

The increase in global demand for lighting solutions, with an emphasis on energy efficient sources, is reshaping the lighting industry, while the continued market expansion in the region puts the Middle East in the spotlight as global majors target Light Middle East 2017.

The leading trade, networking and business generating event for the lighting design and technology industry in the region, Light Middle East returns to Dubai later this year, larger and more representative than ever before. Organisers Messe Frankfurt Middle East, are expecting the show to open at least 10% larger than the previous edition in terms of both area and number of exhibitors, underlining the increasing appeal of the region to global players.

According to analysts Frost & Sullivan, the global lighting industry is at a crucial tipping point, with new technology driving innovative solutions and energy efficient lighting solutions. Solid state lighting solutions powered by LED is expected to form as much as 50% of the total global lighting market, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% till 2020 from the 2015 value of US$ 87 billion.

In the GCC, the LED lighting market was estimated to comprise about 38% of the total lighting market in 2015. It is expected to clock a CAGR of 16-17% and cross 50% of the total market by 2019-2020. Growth of the LED lighting market is largely driven by Greenfield investments in the real estate and infrastructure sectors in the Gulf Cooperation council, which is still an attractive market for the construction sector.

Ambitious plans by governments are also driving the progress towards energy efficient and integrated lighting systems, with Dubai’s retrofitting of its public lighting systems with LED lighting, expected to same about 300 gwh of energy consumption by 2030.

“The latest in innovative technology and cutting-edge developments as well as key insights into the road ahead for lighting technology and design, will all be on offer at the upcoming edition of Light Middle East, which is expected to be even more comprehensive in reach and content than before,” said Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East. “The exhibition continues to be the premier launching platform for global players looking to engage with this promising region, as well as the most diverse sourcing destination for traders and buyers looking for the latest in lighting technology.”

Leading provider of intelligent and sustainable lighting components, Fulham sees LED lighting the way ahead. Srinivasan P.S, General Manager of Fulham said: “The LED market today is about 50% new construction and 50% retrofit.  Customers are increasingly aware that LED lamps and tubes that use existing fluorescent, HID or Induction power systems are not the best way to reduce energy use. Therefore, we are seeing more and more use of complete retrofits – either via the luminiaire (which come from Fulham OEMs) or from retrofit kits that go in existing luminaires. While the market continues to grow at 20%, we see emergency lighting systems and controls are our next growth areas.”

Also returning to Light Middle East are PUK Italia Group, leading manufacturers of outdoor lighting fixtures. Simone Ferrari, Export Manager of PUK Italia said: “The Middle East market is more and more important for us, we have so many clients in the Gulf area that our business volume is increasing year after year. We will display a selection of our new items 2017, some prototypes that will enter into production in 2018 and some of our most significant products into regular production.”

Among the other key exhibitors who will be returning to Light Middle East 2017 include: 3S International (Canada), Al Zubair General Trading Establishment (UAE), Bjb (Germany), Decolight (UAE), ERCO (UAE), FIVEP (Italy), Forma Lighting (Italy), LEDS-C4 Lighting (UAE), Light Factor Enterprise (UAE), SLV Middle East (UAE) and Switch Made (UAE)

Hoping to make a big splash in the Middle East market on their debut include: Elettrico Lighting (UAE), ELT Especialidades Luminotecnicas (Spain), Opple Lighting (UAE) and TCI Middle East (UAE).

Supplier to the Kuwait Government for their street lighting components, ELT Especialidades Lunimotecnicas from Spain are hoping to capture the market’s imagination with their range of products at their Dubai debut. Export Manager, Sergio Vilalta said: “By meeting with the core market actors at Light Middle East, we’ll gain an insight into how to make it in the industry according to trends, competitors offer, buyer demands and tailor-made requests while also meeting new potential partners to identify new incoming perspectives and challenges to gain, transforming our exhibition into a successful investment.”

Also returning in Light Middle East 2017, will be the Future Zone, a showcase of innovative technology, cutting edge design and trends; Ready, Steady, Light a competition that invites manufacturers, lighting designers and students to install an exterior lighting scheme under time, budget and equipment constraints; Light.ication, which promotes lighting design through education; and the popular Light Middle East Awards gala ceremony, celebrating the region’s outstanding projects, products and lighting design.

20th edition of Intersec 2018 to open in Dubai in January Pelco, NAFFCO, among ‘originals’ on board for 20th anniversary edition of Dubai security, safety and fire protection trade fair

As preparations continue ahead of Intersec 2018, the 20th anniversary edition of world’s largest trade fair for security, safety, and fire protection will be a notable milestone for a number of exhibitors that have grown with the exhibition since its inception in 1999.

Pelco by Schneider Electric is one of 13 companies at Intersec 2018 that exhibited at the inaugural edition 20 years ago, and will line up alongside more than 1,300 exhibitors from 58 countries when the three-day event opens from 21-23 January at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The American-based provider of security cameras, CCTV, and video surveillance systems had no direct presence in the Middle East until 2003 when it opened an office in Dubai, and has since established itself as one of the region’s major players.

Pradeep Nair, Pelco’s Regional Sales Director for the Middle East and India, said: “Even with direct presence in Dubai, it took us a bit longer to establish our offices in other Middle East cities and Intersec helped as the major platform to meet new and current customers in a single place.”

“Today, with a much larger presence and increased market share in the region, we see Intersec as a key platform to launch our new products and show our presence to the market.”

Nair said the Middle East continues to show tremendous opportunities in all business categories, which has been reflected in substantial growth for the regional security industry, while the market has easily adapted to the transition from Analogue to IP and advanced industry technologies.

He added: “Today, Pelco’s product portfolio includes the best performing IP products in the Industry, which are completely open and offer great benefits to end-users. This has helped us win some key projects in the region and maintain a large market share over the last several years.

“Some of our major regional references include shopping malls, metros, city surveillance, airports, prestigious hotels and many large oil and gas facilities. Our revenue has grown exponentially from 1999 to 2017, and from the first Pelco employee on the ground in 2003, we now have more than 30 employees across the region in various sales and support roles.”

Much like Pelco, Intersec’s own growth has been immense since its debut show in 1999, when Pelco was one of just 61 exhibitors from 13 countries.  Now two thirds of the world’s top 50 security solutions providers are on board for 2018, including 19 of the top 20.

Nair said it was the quality and support both brands provide that’s key to their respective growth and success over the years: “Pelco has always focused on maintaining its brand image and quality, even in challenging times, which has been the case with Intersec as well,” he  said.

“We anticipate that Intersec will continue to grow as the largest professional security show in the European Union and Middle East, as its footprint continues to expand with more exhibitors and attendees.”

Regarding their solutions on show at Intersec 2018, Nair added: “Pelco will continue to focus on solutions that deliver meaningful innovations that deliver the specific features and functionality that users need for their specific video surveillance needs.

“More specifically, we’ll feature specific solutions for oil and gas and city surveillance applications featuring our leading-edge VideoXpert Enterprise and Professional VMS and ExSite Explosion Proof IP Cameras, which are most relevant for this region.”

Other companies at Intersec 2018 that exhibited at the inaugural edition in 1999 include Teleste, Corodex, Dafoos Fire Protection, NAFFCO, Siemens, Zener Electronics, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), Technoalarm, Kidde Fire Protection, Kidde International, and Vicon Industries.

UAE-based NAFFCO offers another success story of its remarkable expansion over the last two decades, not only in the Middle East, but internationally, having established itself as one of the world’s leading suppliers of life and fire safety solutions with a global network spanning over 100 countries.

From a 12sqm stand 20 years ago, NAFFCO will occupy more space than any other exhibitor at Intersec 2018. The global powerhouse will cover 1,700sqm at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, from where it will showcase its vast range of UAE-made firefighting equipment, protection systems, trucks and vehicles.

Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Intersec’s organiser Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: “Intersec has grown in size and scope over the past two decades keeping pace with, and reflecting the tremendous transformation in the regional safety and security market.”

“It has evolved into a multi-level interactive and inter-connective event that is instrumental in hosting some of the most significant product launches, market forays and new business partnerships in the industry.”

Pauwels added much of Intersec’s growth and success is also due to the long-standing support of the show’s official government partners, which now includes the Dubai Municipality.

“The Dubai Police, Dubai Civil Defence, and Dubai Police Academy have been Intersec’s official partners for many years, and their support is crucial as we continue to expand the show together,” said Pauwels.

“We’re delighted to also have the Dubai Municipality on board as an official supporter, which becomes even more important with major events such as the Dubai Expo 2020 drawing ever closer, and the need to keep critical infrastructure, assets, and people safe with the latest security equipment and technology.”

Intersec 2018 is expected to attract more than 31,000 visitors from 128 countries visitors, and covers the seven show sections of Commercial Security, Fire & Rescue, Safety & Health, Homeland Security & Policing, Perimeter & Physical Security, Information Security, and Smart Home & Building Automation.

New features for 2018 include a Drones Pavilion and indoor Drone Zone, while a Wearable Security Pavilion will put the spotlight on advanced textiles including head-up displays, body cameras, embedded sensors, exo-skeleton communications and more.

Returning features include the Safety Design in Buildings Pavilion in the Fire & Rescue section, as well as an Outdoor Demonstration Zone of the latest fire rescue applications in action.

Dubai’s Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA) will also headline a three-day conference programme, where the Emirate’s security regulatory body will provide the latest updates on Dubai’s Regulation of Security Industry Law.

Intersec 2018 is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.  More information is available at:  www.intersecexpo.com.

SAUDI DESIGN WEEK 2017 The Kingdom’s First and Premier Exploration of Local and International design returns for its fourth year October 5-8, 2017 APEX Convention Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

October 5-8, 2017, Saudi Design Week will be at KAPSARC’s Apex Convention Center, Riyadh

–       Promises to deliver unique opportunities to learn about design through curated exhibitions, design forum, fair and various activities.

–       Talks and workshops from leading creative leaders and designers aimed to engage, educate and inspire audience and emerging practitioners.

From October 5-8, 2017, Saudi Design Week returns to transform Saudi Arabia’s capital of Riyadh into a dynamic and interactive design platform.

Oasis Magazine and the Saudi Design Week team are launching their fourth annual design event devoted to exhibiting innovative product design, and supporting national and international designers. It brings the masters in the creative industries together with emerging talents, giving them a communal space to share in their common passion as one community.

This year’s theme explores the concept of “Design in Motion”. Designers will study that sense of motion figuratively by showcasing the stories behind their products as they move from sketch to shelf, or seek a more literal understanding by exploring the intersection of design and sports, and even motion in design through multiple dimensions such as time.

Special Projects:

Black Diamond is a design installation by BIA design studio seeking to unify the event’s identity with that of the venue’s (KAPSARC) as well as its architect’s, the late Zaha Hadid. The piece will use shades of black and be scattered in space to represent the fragments of a gem, all of which is intended to evoke petroleum and its impact on the region.

DESIGNxUS by Shepherd Design Studio is considered a response to local architecture by presenting spatial configurations that synthesize local polychrome frescos and dynamism of space. The goal is to develop a space that engenders design in-transit and makes it a creative nexus that encourages collaboration.

Alongside site-specific installations, Saudi Design Week 2017 brings together over 50 unique designers both local and international with a special focus on promoting the talents within Saudi Arabia and creating a dynamic platform for exchange across the designers encouraging and following the direction and vision of Saudi 2030.  Sponsors are also taking an active role in this year’s theme and creating special exhibitions for the audience to enjoy.

“An ardent supporter of the arts, Van Cleef & Arpels is proud to partner with Saudi Design Week, a unique design initiative supporting local and international talent.” says Alessandro Maffi, Van Cleef & Arpels Managing Director Middle East and India. “To mark this occasion, the Maison invites jewelry admirers to Couture & Movement, an exhibition and interpretation of Design in Motion, highlighting the play of volume and style within its High Jewelry creations.”

Haute Couture and High Jewelry are kindred spirits. They inhabit a universe governed by the same values: a respect for tradition, the transmission of specialized skills, and the constant pursuit of perfection. Van Cleef & Arpels’ High Jewelry collection Couture is a tribute to these shared values. The grace and refinement of Haute Couture are reinterpreted through the eyes of a master-jeweler. Thematically, the Roaring Twenties have exerted a strong influence: much of the jewelry recalls the freedom, extravagance, and modernism which so marked that period. Sumptuous textiles are evoked by creations that imitate the fabric of fine garments. Ornaments like buttons, zips, pompoms, and ribbons are transformed into a glittering interplay of metal and precious stones.

Considered to be Saudi Arabia’s first design festival, Saudi Design Week features curated exhibitions, workshops, dedicated design forum and market and related activities, making this the place to be to discuss, debate and delight in great design.
