From the 6th to the 9th of October 2016, Saudi Design Week transforms the luxurious Durrat AlRiyadh in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia into the region’s epicenter for design and creativity. Oasis Magazine launches the third edition of Saudi Arabia’s premier design fair with a much
larger platform for established and emerging designers both local and international to converge. This year’s program consists of a series of creative workshops, design conference, special events and installations aimed at proliferating a solid design hub in the region.
Saudi Design Week co-founder and Director Basma Bouzo said “We are so excited to bring the third edition of this fair to Riyadh. This year’s line up is incredible and we really hope to illuminate not only designers in the country and region, but to also spark new ideas and for future designers. We have several activities all taking place within the context of design and we are especially excited this year with the screening platform- showing exclusive documentaries relating to design and creativity.” Moving beyond an appreciation for good aesthetics, the 2016 theme of Saudi Design Week explores the concept of Illumination, both literally and figuratively. Design thought leaders and practitioners alike join forces to investigate the role of design in shedding light on significant social issues. The festival promises an immersive experience for visitors to delve deeper into the world of visual communications— discovering the broad stroke of disciplines, topics and practices shaping the creative industries today. Saudi Design Week partnered with renowned jewellery maison, Van Cleef & Arpels, patrons themselves of the burgeoning creative talents in the region:

“Van Cleef & Arpels looks forward to cultivating a long-standing friendship with Saudi Design Week,” says Alessandro Maffi, ManagingDirector of Van Cleef & Arpels, Middle East & India. “The Maison recognizes the astounding talent on Saudi Arabia’s art and design scene; to mark the occasion, creative minds are
invited to embark on a journey through the savoir-faire whilst paying tribute to the Master Jewellers of Van Cleef & Arpels.” Saudi Design Week serves as a crux for designers, institutions and commercial platforms to intersect and champion the importance of design in the local and global sphere today. Hosting a festival of suchmagnitude requires a transformative space that intrinsically shares the same vision and appreciation for good design. As Frederick Zoltan Petry, General  Manager of Al Faisaliah Resort and Spa notes: “It is a pleasure and a privilege to once again host Saudi Design Week–the cultural event of the year. The restive beauty of the natural surroundings along with its rich yet welcoming architectural style, makes the Al Faisaliah Resort the perfect venue to appreciate and contemplate visual ingenuity. Showcasing and celebrating design and art is fundamental to the Resort’s mission. Indeed, the resort experience seeks to rest the body, delight the senses, and engage the imagination. What better way to do this than through design!”SAUDI DESIGN WEEK HIGHLIGHTS:

Message to our Saudi friends

%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%b3%d9%81%d9%8a%d8%b1-%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%81%d8%b1%d9%86%d8%b3%d9%8a

After nine years of an unforgettable stay in Saudi Arabia, my wife and I are leaving definitely your country on the 8th of October.

It is with choking emotion that we leave the kingdom, which we consider our home and which our children, now adults, have been enjoying visiting frequently. How can one not admire the beauty of the desert, the mountains and the sea of this magnificent country? We have visited the many Kingdom provinces and were astounded by its breathtaking landscapes and by the legendary hospitality of its inhabitants. Above all are of course the true friends that we are leaving here and who undoubtedly will remain as such. Loyalty is indeed a Saudi trait.

To all our friends –officials and private individuals– we thank you, from the bottom of our heart for all these years that we spent together and which will remain a treasure for us.

I would like to seize the opportunity to tell our friends that, professionally, I was lucky to live an exceptional experience. Despite a very challenging regional environment, Saudi Arabia remains a pole of stability and development, as well as an international actor whose role is increasingly important day after day. Riyadh has become, in a way, the new capital of the Arab world; and its points of views have to be taken into consideration by the great powers. The fast economic development in the Kingdom during the recent years has deeply changed the life of its inhabitants. Thanks to King Abdullah’s determination, Saudi women play an increasing role in the society. The young people outspokenly express on the social networks their aspirations for more jobs and increased entertainment.

The Kingdom is thus a stable but forward moving country. The global changes– emergence of a multipolar world, energy and environmental policies’ evolution – should be everyone’s concern and the Kingdom is adapting to that. In King Salman’2030 vision this bold analysis of the situation provides the Saudi citizens with new perspectives.

It is indeed difficult to change one’s habits and some really fear the impact of the reforms. However, the general orientations are the good ones and the Kingdom can rely on valuable assets that it can use. Proper consultations between the main economic players, will enable the Kingdom to recover growth and gain confidence in its future. Moreover, the Kingdom assumes its responsibilities with increasing strength in the international relations. It is in difficult moments that we need our friends. As you know, France has been a friend of the Arabs and a reliable partner of the Kingdom since the visit paid by King Faysal to General De Gaulle in 1967. During the recent years, we have significantly strengthened our cooperation in all fields and I am proud to have contributed to it.

In the new international context, Saudi Arabia can rely on France. We share the same views about the regional situation. We have an exemplary cooperation in the security and military fields. Our economic and cultural exchanges have grown tremendously. I am convinced that French technology, in many of its leading aspects of interest to Saudi Arabia as well as our expertise in public and private partnerships and in training – both technical and professional – will facilitate the increase of joint ventures between French and Saudi companies, large, medium and small. I feel confident in the continuing reinforcement of our strategic partnership.

Allow me to conclude this message by conveying again our sincere thanks with our warm and friendly wishes for the future and our hopes to see you often.

Long live to the friendship between France and Saudi Arabia!

Bertrand BESANCENOT

French ambassador to the Kingdom

Novo Nordisk launches Tresiba® a new generation basal insulin in [Saudi Arabia]

%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%b3%d9%83%d8%b1%d9%8a

Today, Novo Nordisk has launched Tresiba® (insulin degludec), in Saudi Arabia. Tresiba® is a once-daily basal insulin for people with diabetes that successfully achieves equivalent reductions in blood glucose levels, with a lower risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia versus insulin glargine1,2. Tresiba® allows for flexibility in day-to-day dosing time, when needed without compromising efficacy or risk of hypoglycaemia3-5.

One of the key challenges with insulin therapy is the risk of hypoglycaemia, when blood glucose levels fall to lower than normal levels, causing unpleasant symptoms, such as dizziness and confusion, unconsciousness and sometimes leads to death6,7. Research shows that fears and concerns about hypoglycaemia can interfere with achieving optimal glycaemic control in people with diabetes using insulin8. Hypoglycaemia that occurs at night is of particular concern9 for people living with diabetes, as it is unpredictable and difficult to detect10.

Results from studies over a two-year period show Tresiba® successfully achieves equivalent reductions in HbA1c, but with a lower risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia compared to insulin glargine:

  • 43% for people with type 2 diabetes1
  • 25% for people with type 1 diabetes2

“Maintaining good blood glucose control with insulin treatment can be challenging for healthcare professionals and patients due to concerns over hypoglycaemia and night-time hypoglycaemia in particular. Tresiba® has shown less risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia than the most widely used basal insulin,” said Vikrant Shrotriya, VP Gulf, Novo Nordisk.

“Tresiba® can be administered at any time of the day, offering flexible dosing when needed. This flexibility could help improve the lives of patients, as poor insulin adherence contributes to poor glycaemic control.” said Dr.Saleh Aljaser.

“We are glad that people with diabetes in Saudi Arabia will get access to Tresiba® which will help them enjoy better lives and manage their diabetes” said Mads Bo Larsen, CVP BAGIE, Novo Nordisk.

Complications from diabetes caused by failing to keep optimal glycaemic control can be serious, and may include problems such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nerve damage and premature mortality11,12. In Saudi Arabia, where 4.7 million people live with diabetes,1.4 million adult patients are still undiagnosed and the number of diabetes-related deaths was 23,420 in 201513.

At the end Dr.Saleh Aljaser who is a consultant endocrinologist in National Guard hospital and the head of Saudi Society for Endocrinology and Metabolism (SSEM) has shared his scientific experience in using Tresiba® . Also Dr.Saud Alsifri who is a consultant endocrinologist in Alhada Armed Forces Hospital and the chairman of the specialised medical center talked about hypoglycaemia as one of the major barriers in diabetes management.

Cream of Europe

creamofeurope

CNIEL, the French Dairy Interbranch Organization, and the European Union have together embarked on a 3 year global campaign to raise awareness of French dairy cream. The campaign is taking place in 9 different countries of Asia and Middle East: China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Throughout the year different actions addressed to pastry professionals are organized, such as master classes with reputed pastry Chef or training in cooking schools. As part of the campaign, La Crème de la Crèmerecipe book is developed each year and distributed in the 9 countries. This pastry manual is usually developed in collaboration with famous French pastry chefs, but this year we’ve decided to pay a tribute to our Chefs ambassadors in each country of the campaign and to feature their personal recipe of a famous French dessert: the Saint-Honoré. Let’s discover how and why European cream makes such a difference when it comes to pastry, and learn more about the iconic Saint-Honoré & our guests Chefs: Mona Mosly & Honorine Reach.

The culinary success of cream is due to the multiple roles it plays in improving taste, texture, binding and even presentation. Its silky, creamy, smooth and shiny texture is why the term “creamy” is so widely used by tasters to describe the smoothness of a product.Cream enhances aromas and reveals flavours without dominating, and respects the subtlety of food. By mixing hot or cold cream with another ingredient, it will either thicken or soften the consistency of that ingredient while giving off a tangy note. It also binds and stabilizes hot preparations: it will soften stuffing and egg dishes, making them more cohesive.Other advantages of cream: it reduces the bitterness of cocoa, the acidity of lemon, and tempers the pungency of certain fruit and the astringency of others. It improves the fondant used on pastries and turns fruit into mousse. Finally, its willingness to be worked results in a voluptuous cloud when whipped.Gourmet and delicious, rich cream brings roundness and power that intensifies recipes. It coats the mouth and gives a lasting quality to pastries that no other raw material can. The taste of cream is not the only attribute to celebrate: it also provides a rich, smooth sensation.Because cream has its place in the finest kitchens around the world, its use has adapted to the needs, practices and new expectations of chefs: progress in the diversification of creams has allowed for greater control when cooking and the packaging has allowed it to be sold on store shelves (instead of refrigerators), providing greater freedom of use and storage. All of this combines to make cream an essential ingredient in any sophisticated pastry!

Beyond the aesthetic effect and the textures, cream refines, lightens, brings a smoothness, and a roundness to pastries. Last, but not least cream fixes and distributes flavours. Being very pliable, you can add vanilla or soak mint in it, and you will end up with a completely different cream. Cream has the ability to bring different tastes and flavours to the forefront. Coloured, flavoured or mixed , using cream is becoming a subtle exercise in pastry creation. Today, the process of infusion makes each cream unique, both in its creation and the way in which it’s used. By inserting different flavours into their pastry, through various concentrations and refining methods, French chefs are able to create truly unique signature tastes. Classical cream flavourings would be vanilla, coffee or fruits with some chefs using fruit purées or juices to perfume their cream. Herbs are a new trend in flavouring : verbena, mint, tarragon, basil, rosemary, coriander, tea, whether fresh or dried, are an aromatic delight in cream. They meld perfectly with the cream and allow the herbs to uplift the cream. The herbarium has no single rule: some plants must be infused cold, others hot.

The cake topped with choux pastry and cream is called Saint-Honoréin homage to the patron of French bakers. The famous Parisian pastry maker Chiboustinvented it in the mid-18th century. Originally, it was conceived as an oversized brioche stuffed with pastry cream.  In time, a shortcrustpastry replaced the brioche and pastry cream succeeded to Chiboustcream. The choux pastry balls topped it all off. Ask a pastry chef today what is his favouritecake with cream is and two out of three will answer the St Honoré. As no recipe was recorded, each chef had his own way of preparing this cake, which has now gone on to become a classic of French pastry making. For the base, contemporary professionals use anything from puff pastry, shortcrustpastry, pâtesabléeto choux pastry. Even though the choux are universally present, their fillings can be somewhat unique. Some advocate pastry cream whereas others opt for a Chiboustcream (pastry cream and meringue). The contemporary approach is to go for a custard (milk, egg yolks and cream), which is often flavoured. Finally, no one hesitates to add an aesthetic garnish to make this a feast for the eyes. This can be done by adding fruit, fruit compote, candied fruit or caramel.By contrast, all agree that this refined dessert should be topped with a luxurious Chantilly cream. The current practice is for this cream to be infused. Sometimes with herbs, sometimes with pistachio, vanilla, or other spices, chocolate, honey, orange blossom, etc. Thus, the Saint-Honorécontinues. It’s a modern as well as a traditional dessert. A cake for all seasons and for all servings, whether individually or collectively. Good for any occasion –even an impromptu party -it is a classic that will never go out of fashion…
